Microsoft Teams - "Open with the desktop app" default setting has disappeared

Hi,

We are currently using Microsoft Teams for team collaboration and we mainly use Microsoft Office desktop applications to open and edit our Office files. We do not use the integrated Teams editors or the web-based editors.

A couple weeks ago, the "Default behavior" option appeared in our Teams desktop applications and we were able to select "Desktop app" as the default way of opening files when double clicking a file in Teams. This is very handy for us and we recommended to all of our users to switch to this in order to open files.

But a few days ago, we discovered that this option is not available anymore in the choices presented : We now only have the "Teams" and "Browser" options, either from the general "Settings" menu or while right-clicking a file and select "Change default". The desktop app option has completely disappeared from the list. For those like me who configured Teams to open files directly from Office by default, the new default is now the Teams editor.

We tried to delete Microsoft Team's cache on one of our computers, but the option is still missing.

Is there a way to have this option back for our organization ? Is there something we need to configure in the Teams' admin center ?

    I was able to do it yesterday - today it only has 2 options: open in app, open in teams. Typical Microsoft garbage. I don't know why companies keep using it.

    after skimming all of these comments, I am still very confused. I just purchased a M365 license. I see options to default to Teams or Browser but NOT to open with APP. We would like to do this as we have files that only edit well in the desktop app. I am able to use the Open With option and select the Open With App option, but would like it to default to this to make it easier. M365 licenses are the ones that Microsoft is pushing. Is this not available with this license and we have to DOWNGRADE to a E3 license? Can anyone clarify? Thanks

    Our organisation has an E3 license. In the old Teams we still have this option. In the new version when we want to use the setting to change the default behaviour to opening files in the desktop app we get a message that it is not yet supported in the new Teams version.

    Sorry, just noticed that this thread is two years old. :-)

    There is a simple way to directly open Teams files in the desktop apps. When you synchronize the files (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sync-sharepoint-and-teams-files-with-your-computer-6de9ede8-5b6e-4503-80b2-6190f3354a88), you can access files through the OneDrive File Explorer.

    This way the file also shows as a separate button on the taskbar instead of grouped under the Teams one.

    Furthermore I find it helps to eliminate account errors, when using mutiple work accounts on one computer.
