Microsoft Teams - "Open with the desktop app" default setting has disappeared

Hi,

We are currently using Microsoft Teams for team collaboration and we mainly use Microsoft Office desktop applications to open and edit our Office files. We do not use the integrated Teams editors or the web-based editors.

A couple weeks ago, the "Default behavior" option appeared in our Teams desktop applications and we were able to select "Desktop app" as the default way of opening files when double clicking a file in Teams. This is very handy for us and we recommended to all of our users to switch to this in order to open files.

But a few days ago, we discovered that this option is not available anymore in the choices presented : We now only have the "Teams" and "Browser" options, either from the general "Settings" menu or while right-clicking a file and select "Change default". The desktop app option has completely disappeared from the list. For those like me who configured Teams to open files directly from Office by default, the new default is now the Teams editor.

We tried to delete Microsoft Team's cache on one of our computers, but the option is still missing.

Is there a way to have this option back for our organization ? Is there something we need to configure in the Teams' admin center ?

Regards,

I also concur - this is a CRAZY change and is such an annoyance - our users "Deal" with the Teams or Browser views - the formatting from one to the other is not always the same - and creates multiple steps to access a product you are licensed for and have installed.

    Good day,

Manually Updating the Microsoft teams app works for me.

Click the settings (triple dot) and check for updates.

Teams will proc to ask you restart teams and it should now have the change default settings to app

    Hi,

We tried updating and restarting our Teams application and it did not work. The only options that are available when settings the default app are "Teams" and "Browser". There is still no "Destkop app" option, either in the global settings or by right-clicking on an Office file and selecting "Edit default value".

    I agree with this %100

For such a simple feature to require the top end license is extortionate, especially as the online version of word and excel are so limited even for very basic tasks.

I am very unhappy with Microsoft that they are deliberately crippling simple features for paying customers.

i just spoke with Microsoft and all they can say is "Sorry"

Microsoft gives a product to customers, allows them to use the product, never suggests that it is some sort of trial bases and now they just take it away and say "Sorry" if you want it back you have to pay for it.

Oh and you have to pay more than double what you are paying now since the only comparable license to the Premium license is an E5 license.

    from $22 to $57 per seat(user).

How is this a good busines model for Microsoft to rug pull its customers in such a way.

never have i been treated so bad by customer support just telling me "sorry" we only fix broken issues. your problem is not something that is broken and there is no one that can help you. You just simply need to upgrade to our higher license.

How can Microsoft expect a customer to go from paying roughly $5,000 monthly to paying now more than $12,000 monthly. Just to get back the same feature that they were already using previously.
