Can you mute by default whenever you enter a TEAMS meeting? I know this option is available in WebEx, but can't seem to find it in the settings in TEAMS.

I had not considered the push to talk option. In my opinion, that would be the ideal option for all participants except for a presenter that would speak for the majority of the meeting, then add a toggle to leave mic on. Brilliant.

Same story, Googled the issue, found this thread. This is still very much an issue.
The Teams UI, in terms of contrast and intuitiveness IMHO rates as a bit of a downgrade to its predecessor Skype. All around, not just in terms of lacking a "ALWAYS DEFAULT TO MUTED" option.
And I'll go 1 further, as a Gamer on my free-time. In Video Game Communications I prefer to use a feature known as "Push (this button) to talk". If I'm not pressing that button, I'm muted, period.

Agreed. Default should be voice and camera off. I almost spoke to an office guest during a Teams meeting without realizing the mic was live. I wonder how many folks have said something not meant for the Teams meeting group in error.
