Additional team and channel-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for Education
SOLUTION BELOW!
Mic volume was ok for me previously but went very quiet recently, possibly with a Teams update (now that it updates silently from time to time). I am currently using version 1.4.00.19572 (64-bit). I am using Windows 10 on a Lenovo Yoga C740 laptop/tablet using the built-in microphone array, which uses Realtek Audio drivers.
Observation:
- Good volume in Voice Recorder app
- Very low volume in Teams desktop app
- Good volume in Teams web app (reported by colleagues, there's no "test call" option in Teams web app to test for yourself)
- Very little movement in the mic volume meter in Windows, Settings, Sound, Input, "Test your microphone", even when speaking loudly or close to the microphone
Things that DIDN'T work:
- Changing to a headset plugged into the 3.5mm socket. Same low mic volume in Teams, good in voice recorder
- Updating the Realtek Audio driver (The update driver wizard said the best version was already installed but also showed that there was a version with a higher number available so I chose that)
- Updating the Realtek Audio Console app
- Yelling into the microphone. People reported that volume was somewhat better but preferred not to see up my nose with my face so close to the camera
SOLUTION
Two things solved it for me:
- Changing the microphone volume setting. There are multiple device and audio settings which made this confusing (various sound, audio and volume mixer options in Windows plus the Realtek Audio Console settings). For me I adjusted in Windows, Settings, Sound, Input, Device Properties and changed from the default of about 40% to 100%. This made the mic volume meter show the volume level had improved.
- In the Teams desktop app go to Settings (... on the toolbar next to your profile picture), Devices, and turn off Automatically adjust mic sensitivity.
After some test calls I determined that leaving the Noise suppression on Auto was best. Other people have advised to set it to Off but that didn't improve the microphone volume and only added in a hiss/background noise. For you it might work better when set to Off.
