Conversation button missing in documents and spreadsheets in Teams

Just getting back to work after vacation and noticed the Conversation button in the top right-hand corner is no longer visible when documents and spreadsheets, both existing and new, are opened in Teams. We use the Conversation button to notify and tag the appropriate channel members that the document has been updated and to share information. This button is no longer available/visible to me; however, it's visible to my associate. See the attached screenshots of a document that was created and opened in Teams.

• Screenshot #1 is from my Teams application (MacBook Pro) showing that the Conversation button is missing.

• Screenshot #2 is from my associate's Teams application (MacBook Pro) with the Conversation button circled in red.

Here are the Teams applications version numbers for myself and our associate. I'm confident that this issue is directly related to the latest version of Teams that was updated yesterday; however, Microsoft Chat Support says that's not the case.

Me: You have Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.17261. It was last updated on 6/29/22.

Associate: You have Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.15861. It was last updated on 6/14/22.

I've also confirmed that a user outside of my organization running Version 1.5.00.17867 is also experiencing this issue as of this week.

Any assistance would be very helpful.

    Please let this not be true, this is a very fundamental collaboration button!

    Does Microsoft see the removal as a new feature?

    https://admin.microsoft.com/?ref=MessageCenter/:/messages/MC400957

    Changes to the Office ribbon in Teams include:

    • Open in Browser and Open in Desktop App move to the mode menu
    • Introduction of the Share menu, consistent with Office for the Web
    • Conversation button is removed
    • Introduction of in-app Search bar in app header

    Workaround is (but more steps):

    In a document in teams, click on

    Go to posts, create new conversation en paste te link in the chat.

    We have looked for weeks to find anything about this issue. Now that it is found I would like to add my voice to the pleas to restore the conversation feature. Like the other commenters have pointed out the conversation feature is the core usefulness of TEAMS. This is the second time we have lost the future but only 50% of us have lost it twice while the others still have it and have had it all along. That to us makes this seem like an unplanned action. If unplanned please make it a priority to repair the problem. If there is a plan to remove it eventually for all please reconsider. I assume if planned to be removed that Microsoft would let the consumer know and also provide a suitable and improved replacement function. I can't imagine they would remove function with no thought unless they have lost touch with how the end user depends on this core collaboration method in the tool developed and marketed as state of the art collboration.

    We cannot find a workaround that is suitable. I had read in one blog that the comments tool is receiving devlopment attention and being promoted as improved. While it has it's place with granular edits it disconnected between the comments and doesn't keep a cradle to grave conversation string to keep you collboration process organized and discernable. Also the @mention sends a message outside of TEAMS to Outlook and when you open the email and hit the link it takes you back into TEAMS. That is entirely confusing to end users. It is unnecessary out of direction travel for sure! If we have to suffer with the comments tool being our main collboration tool can there be a way that the @mention alerts within teams as a chat or activity notice? To be clear it in no way replaces the need for the conversations tool.

    It's absolutely mind-blowing knowing that they're even considering removing this functionality from Teams! It's one of the Top 5 things we use within the program.

    Dear ProductDev_Brad,

    Thank you for sharing your experience here. We apologize for the inconvenience the problem caused you. I really appreciate your effort and your precious time doing those.

    From your description, it seems that you cannot see Conversation button when opening Office files in Teams app.

    If so, recently we received several users report about missing the conversation button when opening files in Teams client (Mac/Windows). We do understand it has affected your work and apologize for the inconvenience.

    To help you and the other members have a clear picture of this issue status, here is a summary of this issue.

    Issue symptom:

    =======================

    This Conversation button is missing in Teams desktop client when opening files in Teams. We test Word/PowerPoint/Excel/OneNote in Teams, they have the same behavior.

    Image

    Image

    Environment:

    =======================

    The latest version of Teams app on Mac and windows.

    Current status:

    ================

    We have tested it on our side with the latest version of Teams client on Mac and windows, and we can reproduce the situation in Teams desktop client.

    At the same time, we also tested the Teams online and we could find the button on web version of Teams, we'd suggest you go to Teams for web to check if you can find this option, if so, on the one hand, you can use Teams for web temporarily.

    On the other hand, for the situation you encountered, we apologize for the inconvenience caused by this behavior. Since we can reproduce the same situation as yours, this issue may need to checked from background. The best way to solve this issue is to report issue to related team. You may contact your Office 365 admin to help raise a ticket, Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Docs for further information and support because the engineers in related team have higher permission and resource than us.

    This behavior also appears on the latest version on Windows, we setup a main thread about this behavior and we will update the latest information we get in that thread.

    Thanks for your cooperation, have a nice day.

    Sincerely,

    Sean Cai | Microsoft Community Moderator
