Hi Renee JG Arnold,

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum and for sharing the detail. I understand how concerning it can be when your files unexpectedly move from your hard drive to OneDrive. I’m here to help you restore them step by step in a way that’s easy to follow.

Please try the following steps to move your files back to your hard drive on Windows 11:

  1. Download All Files from OneDrive
  • Click the OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar (bottom right corner).
  • Go to Settings > Sync and Backup > Advanced Settings.
  • Select Download all files.
  • Wait until each file shows a solid green checkmark: this means it’s fully downloaded to your device.
  1. Move Files to Your Hard Drive
  • Open File Explorer.
  • Navigate to the OneDrive folder (usually under your user profile).
  • Select the files you want to move.
  • Right-click and choose Copy, then paste them into a folder on your C: drive or another local drive.
  1. Stop Syncing Folders
  • In OneDrive Settings, click Manage Backup.
  • Turn off syncing for folders like Desktop, Documents, and Pictures.
  • This prevents OneDrive from automatically moving files again.
  1. Unlink OneDrive from Your PC (Optional)
  • Go to the Account tab in OneDrive Settings.
  • Click Unlink this PC.
  • This stops OneDrive from syncing with your computer.

For more information that you can explore:

  • There is no automatic “undo” to reverse the move from hard drive to OneDrive. This process must be done manually
  • Please make sure all files are fully downloaded before moving them.
  • If you don’t see the green checkmarks, give it a little more time or retry the download.
  • If you run into any permission issues while moving files, try running File Explorer as administrator.

Thank you again for your patience and for choosing Microsoft Q&A forum. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can assist you with. I’m here to support you every step of the way.
