Can't access to Azure due to tenant inactivity!

Hi everyone! I'm currently facing a bit of a challenge with my Azure account and hoping to get some insights from the community.

I have a personal Azure Tenant linked to my personal account that I haven't used for a very long time – 3 to 4 years. As a result, this tenant has been blocked due to inactivity.

Recently, I needed to use Azure DevOps for a school project. To do this, I attempted to create a new tenant by selecting the "Pay as you go" option, still using the same personal account. I even received an email confirming that my account was successfully set up with a subscription named "Azure subscription 1".

However, when I tried to sign in to the Azure Portal again, it still displays a message saying my tenant is blocked due to inactivity! It seems like creating a new subscription under the same account didn't bypass the old tenant's inactive status.

Is there any way for me to access Azure services (Azure DevOps) while continuing to use my current personal account? I'd really prefer not to create an entirely new account if possible. Any advice or guidance on how to resolve this would be appreciated. Thank you all!

Hi Bùi Thế Anh‏

Please check my above response.

And instead of going to portal.azure.com, try accessing the new tenant directly using one of these formats:

https://portal.azure.com/<tenant-name>.onmicrosoft.com

https://portal.azure.com/<tenant-ID>

This bypasses the default redirect to the blocked tenant and may let you access the new one.

You can try:

  1. Signing out completely from all Microsoft services.
  2. Clearing cookies and cache (or using a fresh browser profile).
  3. Logging in using the direct tenant link above.
  4. Once inside, go to Settings -> Directory + Subscription and set your new tenant as the default.

If you are still facing the issue, then Go to the Azure Portal Help + Support page

Select Issue type: Subscription Management, Problem type: Tenant or Directory Issue and mention the Details and create a support request.

Hope this helps!

Please Let me know if you have any queries.

    Hi Bùi Thế Anh‏

Azure tenants that go unused for a long time (typically over 20 days after being marked inactive) are soft-deleted and become unrecoverable.

You can try the below steps to fix this issue:

    1. Log in to the Azure Portal with your personal account -> Click your profile picture -> Switch directory -> Try Create a new directory (Azure AD tenant). Once it’s created switch to the new tenant.
    2. Now try to move your subscription to this new directory. Go to Subscriptions > your subscription and Click Change directory.
    3. Ensure you must be an Account Administrator / Owner of the subscription to change its directory. If this option is greyed out or missing, the tenant is likely too broken or deactivated.

Alternatively, you can still use your existing Microsoft account by:

Creating a new tenant via Microsoft Entra ID.

Assigning your personal account as the Global Administrator of that tenant.

Setting up Azure DevOps from scratch under the new tenant.

This way, you don’t need to create a new Microsoft account, just a fresh tenant environment.

If you are still facing the issue, then Go to the Azure Portal Help + Support page

Select Issue type: Subscription Management, Problem type: Tenant or Directory Issue and mention the Details and create a support request.

    Hi Bùi Thế Anh‏

Thanks for using the Q&A platform.

You’re running into the fact that your account still defaults to your old Azure AD tenant, which Microsoft has blocked for inactivity, even though you’ve successfully created a new Pay‑as‑you‑go subscription in a new tenant.

Even with a new subscription, the portal keeps you in your home directory (the old, inactive tenant) by default. You need to “switch directories” to your new tenant:

    • Sign in to https://portal.azure.com
    • In the top-right corner, click your account name/email.
    • Select “Switch directory”.
    • Choose the directory that corresponds to your new Pay‑as‑you‑go subscription

    Once you’ve switched directories:

    • Go to https://dev.azure.com
    • Sign in (it’ll sign you into the new tenant context).
    • Click “New organization” and choose your new Azure AD directory.

Your Azure DevOps org will be backed by that new tenant and subscription, not the inactive one.

If you still need that old tenant, you can try taking help with Microsoft support, though this is for tenants with 20days of inactivity https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/fundamentals/inaccessible-tenant
