If anyone is interested in burning $20, there is a 3rd party program that does an excellent job with fixing Microsoft's crappy UI for this issue. I was very against spending money, but I was also tired of waiting on a software conglomerate like MS to fix our small concerns. I tried using folderico (https://www.folderico.com/) and it worked even better than I expected. Not only does it do what we all want Windows to do like it used to, but it even lets you edit the folder icon, like zoom in, pan, etc.
This may sound like an ad for them, but I am in no way affiliated with them. I was just impressed enough with their software, and pissed enough with Windows Explorer, to give it a try. The free demo lets you try it on around 10 folders before it requires a license.
Hope this helps someone else that can afford to torch a $20 bill...
