After updating to windows 11, the option to customize "Choose a file to show on this folder icon" does not change the folder's display image even after applying, I have tried the solutions displayed here " https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/all/folder-icon-thumbnails-broken-windows-11-pro/0e60c9ee-e5f0-4e6d-80c9-42cf2f89752e " but it did not solve the issue, I also do not have the option to revert to windows 10 where this problem never occurred

21H2 doesn't have that capability. You'll need to upgrade to 22H2 for the folder thumbs to work.

Go to the Microsoft Feedback Hub, and plus the restore folder.jpg issue. While it will not get immediate results, Microsoft claims that they listen. Unfortunately, unless feedback is posted on the "Hub", it makes it easy(er) for them to ignore the hue and cry from the millions of wounded users when they break the U.I.. also unfortunately, this forum is not an official site for input to Microsoft. If you cannot find the restore Folder.jpg issue; no worries, Just put it in again. (Perhaps both!) The more the merrier. :D

Edit: A quick google search for Microsoft Feedback Hub will get you a link to the app.

That has NOT been fixed as we have all asked. It HAS been fixed as you have shown, however the image is not placed ON the icon, but half the picture is shown as being in there.

In my estimation, this is worthless. As you can plainly see, it says "Choose a file to show ON the folder icon," not IN.

My current version of Windows 11 is way beyond 22557, and yet this is not yet fixed.

When can we all expect to see this corrected? Thank you.

Changing the Icon has been around for a very long time. Being able to change folder Icons is not the issue. The issue is the removal of support for what some consider a critical function in the U.I..

I have been using folder.jpg functionality for many years now. For me to use the "Change Icon" feature, I would first have to create literally thousands of custom Icons (One for each folder and subfolder.), then attach those custom Icons to each folder, one by one. With the amount of folders that I have, I could work eight hours a day for a year, and never finish. That doesn't even take into account the inherent drawbacks in such a radical work around (as mentioned in a previous post), for a feature that was working perfectly, but removed. The Fall Changes" have been released, but folder.jpg functionality still hasn't been restored. (at least not in my version of Windows.) Having to make custom Icons also adds additional work and un-needed technicality to the issue. MS should be working to make customizing and working with the U.I. easier, not harder. In this aspect, Windows 11 is a serious DOWNGRADE! Although this issue is very important to me, its just one of many customization and ease of use features that have been removed. I sure hope they fix this pig before discontinuing support for the better U.I..

    Hi,

I have the same issue as the initial requester. Even after the last update it no longer works.

When choosing the Custimize on the folders properties, the bottom option is to change the folders icon, not the image, but the icon.

By default it's yellow folder-map. On choosing "Change Icon", you can select another folder from the shell32.dll, or browse for another icon-file to be used. Selecting an custom icon, displays the content of the icon, and pressing ok should make that icon to reflect that specific folder.

Unfortunately that is no longer the case, only the shell32.dll icons work. At least, as long as the icon-file is not in the same location as the folder. If I put the icon-file in the folder, and select it, the icon is displayed.

    This should be fixed.

Make sure it's possible to use any icon, independent of it's storage location.

Update: It does work, however the icons need to be on a local hardrive. When they are in a Shared (network/nas) driver it does not work. I created an icon folder, storing the icons I use with folders and shortcuts, within my pictures folder. Even after hiding that icons-folder, it still works.
