Windows 11 Folder custom Icon Issue

One more time . . . It's NOT complicated! No money, icon cache cleaning is necessary. It's worked since Windows XP!

IN Windows 11, when you go to folder properties, then customize, it states CLEARLY, "Choose a file to show on the folder icon."

What you write (in part), "With Windows 11, you can no longer see previews of the contents inside the folders," is contrary to the question. What I want to do is show a picture file on the folder, as I could in Windows 10.

If it is not possible to do that, then why does the option still exist in Properties/Customization?

I downgraded back to 10, so can't check on your option in 11 (yet). But for the sake of argumenting, I will add my 10 cents: when you have accumulated 10,000s of folder images over the years - by just editing the title to "folder.jpg", and they disappear the instant you upgrade to 11, how do you batch them back to your display option in just a few clicks??

And there in lies my problem. (and I have a lot more folders than that.) The work, and time I would have to spend having to address each and every folder and subfolder to create an Icon or implement a different solution would be staggering (and almost impossible) for me. All because some "bright-boy" who probably doesn't use that feature decided to reorient folders and remove a snippet of code... for aesthetics; and make millions of users who have come to use and rely on this feature in their daily work miserable. The visual cue that these folder pictures provides, makes my work much faster and easier. I still can't see why crippling user productivity, ease of use and removing this and other much needed productivity tools that people have come to rely on over the years makes sense. Thumbs up on your post Franvill54. I hope MS does the right thing and fully restores this feature seamlessly so existing folder.jpg files just start working again with full, clear pictures and without any user input.

For those that haven't yet please submit feedback through the official feedback hub, and let them know how dissatisfied you are that this feature had been removed in the first place, and how substandard you think the current fix is. If there is enough feedback, and input from dissatisfied users, perhaps... just perhaps, we MAY see this feature fully restored, and in a somewhat timely fashion. If there is enough negative feedback over the mishandling of this feature, it will be harder (although not impossible) for MS to stay apathetic to the hue and cry over its loss (not loss anymore mishandling. sorry. Although... usability is still an issue. ), and their weak substandard attempts to fix the problems they caused by attempting to remove this feature and not restoring it properly.

Did NOT work for me . . . I still have a half-folder hidden. In Windows 10, the whole picture was shown. All I do is have the picture inside the folder to be Customized, go to Properties/Customize and THEN select "Show file on this folder icon." And, then I got the whole picture. (See my prior posts, of there are MANY!) It wasn't rocket science, no 10Forums was needed. It just worked. Now it DON'T, The new format stucks. Fix it.

The picture on the folder in your example; while it does the job, is really small and hard to see compared to what we had before, and therefore another step down. I have Windows 11 on ONE computer in my house, and the major downgrades from Windows 10 have really impacted me hard. The lack of support for Folder.jpg was the deal breaker for me. The ONLY reason I keep Windows 11 on that computer, is to keep up with what is still substandard (in my opinion), and what has been fixed. I don't believe that I can comment on something without first hand knowledge, and I'm whining about the Windows 11 downgrade all the time.

On the upside, once folder.jpg has been restored, I'll finally be able to actually USE my windows 11 computer. The removal of that aspect was crippling to me.

Although some changes in Windows 11 will just take some getting used to (Icons instead of words in the menus), and others are more than a little irritating (Having to hit more to get a full menu to display), there are some changes and deletions that are significant production obstacles or even roadblocks. MS has a history of ignoring complaints that don't impact the person making the decision to implement or restore productivity issues, or taking a really LONG time to implement them. Restoring the much valued "Up Arrow" in Windows explorer is an example of that. It didn't come back until Windows 8, and when they put it back (again in my opinion) it was like putting perfume on a pig. I would tend to agree with others who say that if there is an outcry for a feature that was removed; Please, Put it back unchanged.

Now.... If they can get the menu Icons to appear in the same place every time the menu pops up; that would be another improvement. Having to search for them depending on the window orientation prevents an easy automatic response that is highly valued by users, and a major reason some of these "Changes" are so hard to swallow. The learned response has to be relearned. In the case of the Menu Icons, they move depending on where the Menu pops up on the page. This prevents any learned response pattern from forming and (Opinion again) adversely affects productivity.
