app buttons missing in windows 11 - epson scan

I have solved it.

I just opened the resource files of the driver and changed the setting of the buttons.
I also made the font bigger.. as we are no more living in a 640x480 VGA world...

It seems Epson engineers are too lazy to open a resource file and just change a few settings...

ay be it's easier to them to adandon their long time users and force them to buy some new hardware, maybe from a different brand.
My scanner is an epson perfection v37. As I understand the newer version, v39 , has a less accurate image sensor, so I'll do whatever I can to keep the software driver of my perfectly working hardware updated to new OSes.

Leaving users on their own and leaving drivers as "abandonware" in my humble opinion means forcing loyal users to other hardware manufacturers that respect their own users more. or to open source systems.

I repeat... fixing that driver problem it's a kid trick that can be done in a few hours of work by anyone.

The files involved in the fix are found in C:\Windows\twain_32\escndv\es00dd\local\0410 (0410 it's for the italian language localization, other languages are found in C:\Windows\twain_32\escndv\es00dd\local\ inside their own locale code.

To modify the resources, as I don't own the source code, I had to open the file esres.dll with Resource Hacker (TM) , ... a freeware resource compiler & decompiler for Windows® applications, Version 5.1.7 worked well , Last updated: 3 January 2019, Copyright © 1999-2019 Angus Johnson . That's Freeware : no nags, no ads and fully functional.

Basically you open the file used in your language ( you can find the language right clicking on file explorer and showing details)... after a bit you'll spot the righ language for your system.
Then you'll see all the dialog screens... you then can enlarge buttons, enlarge fonts.
If you double click on a button in a dialog form, you'll see it has a BS_OWNERDRAW property in yellow, set as default.
Just change it to "BS_pushbutton"... and the button will be visible when you run the scanning task. repeat the task for the most used button and everything will be fixed in no time.

keep in mind that some buttons are placed on top of others ( stacked)... as they are set as visible only when the context needs them to be ...visible. So you'll have to move some buttons... label in some easy to tell name.. then change the "caption" property accordingly.

I lost the little icons on the buttons.. but that's not a problem.. I enlarged the dialog windows, screen, buttons, fonts... so it's quite more usable than before, on my Windows 11 x64 OS (italian localization).

don't know why... here I tried to upload a jpg of the twain dialog window but it keeps telling me "failed upload" !! sorry.

Tip : The main dialog is named "UI_DOCUMENT_MAIN_DIALOG". have fun!

Don't ask me for the modified files.. I just told you how easy is to modify and fix the problem.. and now you can fix even other buggy abandonware software.

We paid good money for that piece of hardware, I feel I'm just helping Epson to stop many users from kissing them long goodbye forever. I don't blame who felt angry at Epson for their choice to abandon and stop supporting their faulty drivers under win11.

And I dont trust them enough to release their file in modified version.
Furthermore it would not be safe anyway to run a file in your system modified by someone you don't even know and thus cannot trust ( me. never trust anyone on internet!).

I've shown you how to modify your own files, that is something much more valuable than installing an already modified file.
That's only for educational purposes.
Furthermore you could already find on the net tons of tutorials much better than my few words on how to do that.

Before doing so you should check with a lawyer if in your country you have the right to repair faulty stuff, as a driver left unusable and unfixed by the manufacturer by choice (or lazyness).

Personally, I wouldn't go back, but I started a virtual machine with Win10 (or Win7) and used it there.

I have a virtual Win7 for these purposes, there are a lot of problems with good old programs under new Windows. For example, quite nice software Micreosodft Photostory under Win8 and Win10 doesn't work well.

I need my scanner and after wasting the best part of a day trying all the solutions I reverted to Windows 10 which was surprisingly easy.

I have same problem how do i fix it
