Windows 11 zipped folders / files immediately crashes File Explorer

My Dell laptop was previously Windows 10, now 11. When I right click any zipped folder, it immediately crashes Windows Explorer, but then everything comes back. I can't unzip any zipped file at all - doesn't seem to matter what size it is.

I was trying to use the built-in unzipper utility in Windows, and when that didn't work I tried a couple 3rd party apps, including WinZip. Nothing works; they all crash, and they crash on ANY zipped file I have.

And by the way if I try to ZIP any set of files - even just 3 little word files, it does the same thing. The screen flashes, all my icons go away for a second. Then things come back, but nothing will zip or unzip.

    I have the exact same problem.

    Have trouble deleting zip folders / files, too.

    Thought installing WinZip or 7Zip would help, but problem same with those programs, too.

    I had the same issue; tried WinZip or just extracting from Windows Explorer (note I could not even look at file properties without Explorer crashing).

    What I found was the Carbonite backup program I use caused the crash as shown by the application event log extract below.

    Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

    Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\CarboniteNSE.dll

    Stopped all Carbonite services/executables and trying a zip file again and everything worked as expected. The Carbonite backup software version was 6.4.0 and its UI said it could not find an update. Manual update to version 6.4.1 seemed to resolve the issue-->Carbonite is now running normally and Explorer no longer crashes on zip files.

    Carbonite support just released the 6.4.1 update on 3/3.

    I just reinstalled and .zip files operate as expected in File Explorer.

    Update: the fix is no longer to downgrade, it's to update to the newest client (6.4.1). I've done so and .zip files don't make File Explorer crash.
