Windows 11 zipped folders / files immediately crashes File Explorer

My Dell laptop was previously Windows 10, now 11. When I right click any zipped folder, it immediately crashes Windows Explorer, but then everything comes back. I can't unzip any zipped file at all - doesn't seem to matter what size it is.

I was trying to use the built-in unzipper utility in Windows, and when that didn't work I tried a couple 3rd party apps, including WinZip. Nothing works; they all crash, and they crash on ANY zipped file I have.

And by the way if I try to ZIP any set of files - even just 3 little word files, it does the same thing. The screen flashes, all my icons go away for a second. Then things come back, but nothing will zip or unzip.

    I get the same thing when I right-click and try to unzip. Explorer.exe crashes and then restarts and then I'm able to unzip the folder.

    Edit: This is on a local desk, not a network drive.

    I had the same issue with file explorer crashing, without Carbonite or Powerdesk installed, I do have 7zip installed. Following T.K.313's comment, I was able to right click and specify "Open With" to be "Windows Explorer", but I didn't need to uninstall 7zip to fix. Tested on another computer in our office and that seems to be the fix.

    I fixed this by following other people's examples by uninstalling the only other program assoicated with zip files, 7-Zip. After uninstalling, in file explorer, I set zip files to open with explorer - right-click any zip file and "open with." Before this I could not right-click any file without having file explorer close most the time. Now i can right-click any file without problem.

    I was in a similar situation recently. Changing the archiver helped me. I removed the old one and installed the new one.

    You can use ShellExView to isolate the shell extension causing the crash.
