Banned from Microsoft Community (commenting on an MSN article)

I was reading an article from Microsoft Edge and noticed in the comment section that I was "banned from making comments" for violating the community standards. I thought, "well that's interesting, I have never made a comment before." I even checked the comment history in my profile and confirmed that I had never commented on anything. Perhaps I got banned for thinking something. Has anyone else encountered this?

    Said decision reversed but I'm still banned from commenting, yet people are allowed to repetedly post anti-vaxx nonsense and religious ****. Still don't know why I'm banned but unable to ask.

    I think The Guardian news web site still has human moderators because they will interact in real time with commenters. Moreover, their editorial rules mainly forbid threats and abuses, and don't focus on "nailing" offensive words or terms, so there is more freedom to speak. The Guardian is run by Brits, who are generally more literate and well-educated than Americans.

    Thank you for these observations. Agreed that 'comments cause more trouble than they are worth' is one objection. The answer is in better design.

    Comments can be throttled to hold replies in a queue or timed in a comment funnel. Users, when aware of these methods, take more time to consider the value of content and composition.

    As previously suggested, a user 'dashboard' is another 'rules of the road' method. Traffic symbols and pre-check content warnings guide content submissions with known outcomes before posting.

    AOL has included a 'comments suspended on this story' for multiple violations and specifically limited hot-button articles. Although not perfect, users do have a feedback channel informing them of submission content quality issues. Highlighting words and phrases prior to submission encourages self-editing which makes posts better.

    The conclusion is comments are involving and useful if the content is marshalled through a moderation design that educates, informs and actively guides content to better value and usefulness.

    Why throw-up one's hands and adopt a 'can't be fixed' approach when all that is needed are more autonomous layers of content sifting and pre-post outcome warnings? Comments are both fun and meaningful when design makes that possible.
