Stop upgrade to Windows 11

You can easily stop Microsoft from installing Windows 11 on an eligible machine by simply turning off TPM and Secure Boot in the BIOS/UEFI set up. Then in the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt , then select Run as administrator from the list of options. Select Yes . Next, in the window that appears, type the following commands one at a time, including the spaces as shown. After you type each command, press Enter . Then let each command complete before you type the next command.

net stop bits

net stop wuauserv

ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak

net start bits

net start wuauserv

After all these commands are completed, close the Command Prompt window and restart your computer.

Check for updates again.

You should then get the message that this PC cannot run Windows 11

Unfortunately I have 100+ workstations all reasonably newer Dell machines with SecureBoot and TPM turned on. The point of having a Domain with WSUS is to be able to control and select what updates are approved pushed out to end users. My point here is users can't event disable their on WiFi connection because of our strict policy but they can update their OS! Makes no sense!!

If you disable TPM (Trusted Module Platform), in the BIOS/UEFI wouldn't that stop MS from offering or downloading Windows 11?

Turn off your computer, make the changes and see what happens.

MS says you need a computer that uses UEFI Secure Boot supported and enabled. Turn off Secure Boot,

A Trusted Platform Module (TPM), version 2.0. Turn off TPM

fix lasted about a week before the changes were automatically removed and updates restarted without notification

After a bit of research what I've found is that the E.U. is doing a much better job of holding MS toes to the fire that our DOJ!

That said, these little $10k losses don't even knock the dust off an MS spreadsheet.....

in 2016 Microsoft paid one US complainant $10,000 to end litigation over the issue. The unexpected (Windows 10) upgrades were also the basis of a class-action lawsuit filed in 2017.

Finland's Consumer Disputes Board ruled that Microsoft is responsible for damages caused to a computer after Windows 10 installed without permission. The dispute board has ruled that Microsoft had no contractual right to install Windows 10 without asking for permission

Neowin also cited a case where a woman won a $10,000 judgment against Microsoft for a botched Windows 10 upgrade.

Remember that the DOJ sued MS in 1998 for bundling software (particularly Internet Explorer) which resulted in the bankrupcy of Netscape, MS was ordered to break up into 2 companies, the OS Windows, and Software, (IE, Office etc)

LOL, They appealed and won.....

In 2004, the (EU) commission found that Microsoft had violated antitrust rules by bundling its music and video player, Media Player, into Windows XP and ordered the company to release a second version of Windows with Media Player stripped out. They also made MS allow customers to chose their default search engine as well as allow Symantec into the kernal, anything less would have been the end of Norton.
