High ram usage while idle on a windows 11 pc

Yeah I havent got a clue what this guys on about. Doing a quick rough add gives about 2GB usage from 3rd parties which is about 1/8th of his ram or 12.5% leaving another 43.5% unexplained.

I'm having the same issue with a PC here, 55-65% usage on idle with 8GB of memory

He's talking out of his backside I'm afraid as when it comes down to machine level, there is no such thing as memory reservation and you cannot use more memory to increase computer speed. More memory usage by Windows means that when creating the OS, Microsoft Engineers have used more instructions to perform the same tasks that Windows 10 did with less - therefore it is less efficient and worse, not better and faster. Unused RAM is RAM with unlimited potential, wasted RAM is Memory that could have been saved by making a program more efficient

My quest for answers on this issue has led me here. I've observed a few things between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its clear the OS is using a large amount more than windows 10. Windows 11 running 90 processes on its own. Even chrome was using more ram, if by only 17mb. This being observed after countless days of using for 5+ hours at a time then standby, sleep sometimes for 4-5 hours, sometimes for 10-12 hrs. But when I close the open programs and do a normal reboot, Windows 11 loads at 2.8gb. Even responds faster.

So my question, why is windows services using up so much ram? Is it log files? Is it temp data for quick response? If you only use 4gb of ram, excessive usage never seems to be a problem. But how excessive can you be at just 4gb of ram. With Windows 10 or 11, just bumping up from 4gb to 6gb will increase your Cinebench score...by a few points. But RAM is there to be used. If it makes it more accessible for the user experience, then why not take up that free space that isn't being used. Who cares as long as its not affecting performance. You paid for it, why not use it.

I want to make sure I'm understood in a few things here. Windows 11 uses more ram for background services. Windows 11 is the next wave from Windows 10. More features, heavier gui is always going to eat up more. My concern is the longer Windows 11 goes without shutting down, the more ram heavy it becomes.

I've also noticed users saying their fans ramp for no real apparent reason. I at first blamed this on HP for its unreasonable power profile. But it apparently extends beyond that in Windows 11. For the first minute or so it will boost to its max, fans idle, then suddenly plummet in speed while the fans slowly ramp. I will get full OC as defined by spec. But with extended 100% loads, it will thermal throttle for about 2 min then finally settle just at thermal throttle at base freq. Fans ramping up and down. All this using fresh arctic silver 5.

All in all, if Windows 10 support ends in 2 years, better be on the team supporting the next wave. While i have Windows 11 machines, Win 10 machines still continue to occupy my life. My hope is Microsoft will dump the OS and climb the phugoid scale its continues to trek.

I have the same problem. It is not going away easily; Windows takes up most of the RAM (I have 16 GB), and the memory used up by the processes cannot explain it. On one occasion, Windows sucks up so much memory that if becomes dangerous. Once if happened that my computer became inoperable and it even started to speed up its cooling fan in a dangerous way, because there was not enough memory even for the software that manages the cooling of the hardware.

The thing that helped me is a little app (Ram Booster) you can download in the Windows Store (https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9MTRX5VMVZS3). You can set it up to free memory when your used up memory reaches a given percentage. It works fine (I downloaded it for free, but now it seems to carry a small price tag).

On occasion, Windows tries to consume almost all the available memory (for no valid reason at all, of course). When this happens, this little program starts up a battle with Windows; it tries to recover memory while Windows keeps on doing its nasty thing. Happily, after a few minutes of this little war, the memory cleaner wins and the machine becomes stable, with a reasonable amount of used up memory.

Another thing I do to complement this is to boot the machine once a week. This refreshes Windows and it also helps.

So... I did two things at the same time that may have fixed it for me. I'm on windows 11, 32G; I saw ~21G(~62%) being used right after boot, and it did not go down, even after restarting with making sure that all startup apps were disabled.

Both are extremely condemning of windows.

1: setting > privacy & security > general

and disabled the following

"Let websites show me locally relevant content by accessing my language list"
"Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches"
"Show me suggested content in the Settings app"

2: checked for any update and applied it.

Windows then started with ~5G.

For number 1.

Why would windows load more than 15G worth of apps preemptively? I mapped the total size of the files I have used in the last month, and their size doesn't even reach 15G.

For number 2.

Is Windows one purpose for taking up more ram to force users to update?
