I2C HID Driver Touchpad Failure (I think I solved it)

If the touchpad on your laptop has failed. You're playing now you see it, now you don't wit TOUCHPAD in your settings. And no customer support can assist you from HP or MSFT, try this it just worked for me...

Go to DEVICE MANAGER

Expand HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICES

And you see 12C HID Device has an error.

If you click DRIVER and then UNINSTAL DEVICE the 12C HID Device is delisted, and on startup it magically refreshes.

I was hoping that would do it, but the TOUCHPAD was still inoperative, and the error persisted.

Then, on a wild thought. I repeated UNINSTAL on all of the HID-compliant Device tabs. My thought was the whole HID Device needed a reboot. As soon as they all delisted, I said a prayer and rebooted.

And my touchpad was finally restored!

I hope this helps others, as this was really frustrating.

Ps. In Touchpad settings (once you can access them again) it's also a good idea to tic LEAVE TOUCHPAD ON WHEN MOUSE IS CONNECTED.

    I don't see a tab there called power management, is this also in device manager or is it somewhere else?

    I tried all the methods provided and none of them worked. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver multiple times from the manufacturer website and others, uninstalled all the devices from the human interface devices, restarted after each try, nothing worked. Then I booted into safe mode and restarted the windows normally, everything works fine after that. Hope this helps someone.

    If you are encountering this issue on a Lenovo Legion Y720 or Y740, try the following:

    1. Download this driver software (even though it says Y720, do this also if you have a Y740):

    https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds121004-touchpad-driver-synaptics-elan-for-windows-10-64-bit-legion-y720-15ikb

    1. Run the downloaded software and allow it to install the drivers.
    2. Open up Device Manager, find the I2C HID Device in the list (under Human Interface Devices), right-click it, and select "Uninstall Device".
    3. Still in Device Manager, select the "Action" menu and then "Scan for hardware changes". This should now install the updated drivers, and the exclamation mark next to the I2C HID Device should disappear.
    4. Make sure your touchpad is enabled (hit Fn and F11 together on the keyboard).

    These steps worked on a Lenovo Legion Y740 running Windows 10 22H2.
