I2C HID Driver Touchpad Failure (I think I solved it)

If the touchpad on your laptop has failed. You're playing now you see it, now you don't wit TOUCHPAD in your settings. And no customer support can assist you from HP or MSFT, try this it just worked for me...

Go to DEVICE MANAGER

Expand HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICES

And you see 12C HID Device has an error.

If you click DRIVER and then UNINSTAL DEVICE the 12C HID Device is delisted, and on startup it magically refreshes.

I was hoping that would do it, but the TOUCHPAD was still inoperative, and the error persisted.

Then, on a wild thought. I repeated UNINSTAL on all of the HID-compliant Device tabs. My thought was the whole HID Device needed a reboot. As soon as they all delisted, I said a prayer and rebooted.

And my touchpad was finally restored!

I hope this helps others, as this was really frustrating.

Ps. In Touchpad settings (once you can access them again) it's also a good idea to tic LEAVE TOUCHPAD ON WHEN MOUSE IS CONNECTED.

    If your ASUS laptop touchpad stops working after sleep mode, try this solution:

    1. Follow ASUS website steps up to "Enable and reinstall drivers in Device Manager". Skip system restore/reset steps to avoid data loss.
    2. After completing those steps, if your touchpad works temporarily but stops after sleep mode, try this: a. Open Device Manager b. Under "Human Interface Devices", right-click "ASUS Precision Touchpad" c. Click "Update driver" > "Browse my computer for drivers" > "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer" d. Select the oldest version: "HID compliant touchpad" e. Click Next and complete installation

    This method solved my ASUS touchpad issues that persisted for 6 months, even after BIOS reset, driver reinstallation, and Windows reset. The touchpad now works consistently, even after sleep mode.

    Note: Ensure both "ASUS Precision Touchpad" and "I2C HID Device" are visible and working in Device Manager before applying this fix.

    None of the above worked.

    What did work was to open the unit up & check cables - hey presto touchpad cable was loose after I'd changed battery. No more problem.

    I have been dealing with this issue for almost 1.5 years, and I still haven't received a permanent fix. Many people suggested uninstalling and rebooting the system. Below are the steps that a Microsoft support team member recommended. Note that only the touch-pad was not working; an external mouse worked fine. Use an external mouse or keyboard to follow these steps:

    1. Go to Device Manager -> Human Interface Devices -> I2C HID Device.
    2. If using an external mouse, right-click on I2C HID Device and click on Update Driver.
    3. If using a keyboard, press Enter on I2C HID Device -> Driver -> Update Driver.
    4. Select Browse my computer for drivers -> Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer -> I2C HID Device. If you receive a success message, the touch-pad should start working. If not, try this process a couple more times until you get a success message.

    I wanted to provide this update because many people had suggested rebooting the system. Rebooting can be time-consuming and sometimes results in lost unsaved work. It can also be frustrating to reopen everything after a reboot. Hope this helps until a permanent fix is received from Microsoft.
