make Windows 11 photo thumbnails larger than extra large in file explorer

Now using Windows 11. When I open File Explorer to view photo thumbnails and set the view to Extra Large, it is not any larger than when I set the view to Large. The only difference between Large and Extra Large is that the spacing between thumbnails gets larger -- not the photo itself.

My laptop is still on Windows 10, and Extra Large view there is much larger than the Large view setting.

Can you help?

    To my knowledge, no. The problem is with coding in Windows itself. The devs at MS are going to have to be the ones to fix it. I have 2 machines that run Windows 10. (one dual boots into Linux as well) and one that was Windows 10 and I've upgraded to Windows 11. It is the only one of the three that have the problem. Only Windows 11 has it from what I've seen on my machines and other Windows 11 machines I've seen. All the 11 machines have the problem. I've spoke to a couple of network engineers I know and they are seeing the same thing. And a few of my techie friends say the same. So lets hope MS gets around to putting out a fix for it. It seems minor but it will drive off a lot more people than they think. Good luck. Oh and if anyone runs into a programmer who has wrote a fix for it, PLEASE post it here. Shrug, its possible. There are programmers good enough to do so. I met a few in my life.

    Thanks! That is the first useful reply and greatly appreciated! I do have a hi def display. I am a nunce at tech. Is it possible to activate a setting that will downgrade the display but only when showing tnails, and not when opening the pics or otherwise using the laptop?

    The issue relates to a max icon width in Windows 10/11 and only becomes a problem with very high resolution displays. Lower the resolution and the Extra Large Icons behave as before. This is a hardwired limitation within Windows that the devs will hopefully resolve shortly.

    I have the same problem as the OP. My preview pics are tiny. When I pick a them for Windows 11 for instance. the are very tiny. Making it almost impossible to pick a theme when it is literally the size of a postage stamp. And to make it worse there are NO setting in Personalize where Desktop Themes are located. Zero. No way to adjust it at all. This is only one of a ton of problems and bad choices in Windows 11 so far. I'm a retired network engineer. Started in 1971. Been with MS since DOS 1.0. This new version has more bugs than any version of Windows so far and the silliest interface and control choices of them all. I hope we can at least get this problem fixed. It is really annoying.

    Completely agree with OP. Windows 11 photo thumbnails much smaller than Windows 10 with same view setting. Very annoying
