make Windows 11 photo thumbnails larger than extra large in file explorer

To corroborate what Brian92101 has stated, this issue pertains, we've discovered and established, to higher resolution displays. Mine is WQXGA 2560 x 1600 1440p laptop display and the extra large icons/thumbnails are too small to be useful. As Brian stated, at FHD 1920x1080 res., icons/thumbnails look fine. Thumbnail size is even smaller, of course, at higher resolutions.

The following screen shots, both taken on the same laptop, demonstrate the problem: The first is taken at laptop's native resolution of 2560x1600. You can see that there are a total of 6 thumbnails running horizontally and 7 vertically. The second screenshot was taken with display set to 1920x1200 (my display has a 16:10 aspect ratio, Brian's is 16:9) and you can see that only 5 thumbnails run horizontally and 5 vertically. So, seeing fewer thumbnails means your seeing larger thumbnails. And, you know, they look larger.

Note that all the images in both screenshots are the same size, 2560 x 1600. Thumbnails should scale according to displays resolution.

Windows has a problem displaying properly sized icons/thumbnails at higher resolutions.

When you go into your folder the easiest way to show extra large icons in windows 11. Click on your folder to open it up. In the bottom righthand side is an icon. hold your mouse over it and it'll say, "displays items by using large thumbnails" click on this then go onto your file, then view and click extra large icons....That will work.

Colin, Thanks for your reply but this does not solve the problem. Note that this problem applies to high resolution screens only such as the 3456x2160 OLED display on my Dell XPS-15 (first screenshot). It's not a problem on, for instance, my ASUS 1920x1080 monitor. (2nd screenshot)

I have had this problem on Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft, this is unacceptable! My display resolution is 3840x2160.

I have the same problem as the OP. My preview pics are tiny. When I pick a them for Windows 11 for instance. the are very tiny. Making it almost impossible to pick a theme when it is literally the size of a postage stamp. And to make it worse there are NO setting in Personalize where Desktop Themes are located. Zero. No way to adjust it at all. This is only one of a ton of problems and bad choices in Windows 11 so far. I'm a retired network engineer. Started in 1971. Been with MS since DOS 1.0. This new version has more bugs than any version of Windows so far and the silliest interface and control choices of them all. I hope we can at least get this problem fixed. It is really annoying.
