how do I fix desktop and file folders that do not refresh automatically?

If you are using Windows 11, you can try this:

  1. Open File Explorer
  2. On the top bar, click the right most "..." to open more option
  3. Click "option"

there are three tabs on the top, what you have to do is to click the "restore to default" button on each tab.

remember to click "apply".

    Many Thanks for your Post.

    More than 18 months out, this issue is not resolved.

    In an effort to get this fixed so that I can work efficiently, may I ask a few questions?

    1. Can you describe Windows Explorer's behavior here?

    So, I'm working along using Windows Explorer. I have not changed Folder Options; yet, I derive from your post Windows Explorer has changed its own Folder Options? Am I correct or incorrect here?

    1. What option(s) does Window Explorer NOT like such that Microsoft writing code for them results in no automatic refreshes for changes?
    2. Is your suggestion a Final Solution OR must we perpetually Restore Defaults on each tab that we open each time that we want to use Windows Explorer?
    3. Does anyone know of a stable, reliable 3rd party file management program like were available in the 80s and 90s?

    Agreed. I never encountered this issue before Win11. Unless told otherwise, I regard it as a bug.
