Can't switch out of S mode: "Try that again"

I recently purchased a laptop that came with the S mode of Windows. On the first startup it automatically installed Windows 11 (so downgrading to 10 is not an option). After set up etc. I updated Microsoft Store and installed various Windows updates and tried to switch it out of S mode. Instead, for the past few hours and with each of the hundreds of attempts, I keep getting a window that says "Try that again. Something happened on our end. Waiting a bit might help" along with an error code that changes every time. I am burned out and all out of ideas, any assistance on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

    This worked for me.

I suggest at least looking into what region you are set to and make sure its supported. I was fairly certain that I picked United States and nothing else but apparently it picked something that included it can't remember what it was, something about extra territories I think, but swapping to the correct thing fixed my windows store app and let me swap out of the much-despised s mode.

    Sanchit,

If you could send me the fix, I would greatly appreciate it. I am trying to set up a PC for work but, I can't ask our IT, because it is a Government PC. I need to install ONE program on it, and I can't do it...I can't even run anything from the CMD Prompt. I get the same MSN Verified Message, because exe files.

I have tried repairing, resetting and terminating, but nothing works. One help page said check Windows update by checking 'services.msc' and find 'wuauserv' and try resetting that or restarting it. One problem, it wasn't there, so wondering if the windows update that is supposed to be running in the background isn't and that could be the issue. Running out of ideas and I am pretty decent at finding my way around the PC (Hardware and Software).

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Hi Mike, I am Sanchit, a Windows user like you, that uses Windows daily on a basis. Please note, I am not affiliated with Windows, nor Microsoft, so whatever I might say, may not represent Microsoft. So, here are two things we can do.

    1. Reset your PC. Once you've resetted your pc, and you are at the setup page, please press, "SHIFT + F10" on your keyboard, without the quotations, when you are at the setup page. Once you've pressed that, you will see something named with the lines of, "Command Prompt, or CMD." Once you in that program, type "Start ms-windows-store:" without the quotations. In that, you'll see something named Microsoft Store/Windows Store. From that, it might ask you to connect to your internet, and then in the search box type, "Switch out of S Mode" without the quotations. And click the thing that says Get/Switch out of S Mode. Once done, you will have to hit Get, to get out of S Mode. It might prompt you to sign in with a Microsoft Account, please sign in with your Microsoft account, if you don't have one, you can sign up for it. When done hit Get out of S Mode, then it might prompt you to restart your laptop/desktop, please restart it. Once done, are you are back in the setup, follow the steps, like you'll usually do, when you setup a computer. Once done setting it up, check if S Mode is still on, by going in Settings, and typing in Activation. It should say Windows 10 Home/Pro or Enterprise, not Windows 10 In S Mode. If this method doesn't work, try method two.
    2. If you've bought the laptop from a store, like Bestbuy etc, and the return window/support window is still open, check if you get get it fixed, by Geek Squad team. If you can't get it done by Geek Squad, or Best Buy, or you've bought the laptop from directly the Manfuacter, like DELL, HP, LENOVO, ACER, ASUS etc, and you still have warranty from them, you can call or text them from the support chat, and they'll usually send it to the repair center, to perform testing, on the OS, and they usually will fix it, if not sometimes they might give you a new Laptop. Not so fun fact, I sent my laptop to HP, to get it out of S Mode, and they did it. The Method one, I found the method myself, by doing some testing to get out of S Mode in the setup.

If that doesn't work, please contact me again via MS/Microsoft Windows Forums.

I am also pretty sure the System Product key for Windows is installed in the BIOS/UEFI, so another method is to somehow erase the key from the BIOS, but you'll have to buy another key for windows for around $100.
