Over-exposure in screenshots and recordings with HDR in Windows 11

Hello, I am inquiring about an issue I can't seem to solve (without turning HDR off all-together, which defeats the purpose of having it even be an option in Windows 11)

In recordings (primarily using OBS) and in screenshots (with snip and sketch) everything appears extremely over-exposed / bright with HDR enabled. This is a big problem for me as I actually, well, want to use the OS normally. I record lots of clips and take many screenshots and I've finally gotten fed up of it and am now looking for a solution. Any help appreciated, thanks

(snip and sketch has since stopped doing it, however it likes to do it randomly now. commonly happens in fullscreen programs and also my web browser for some reason)

    On a side point, I changed the colour profile in Chrome which seemed to fix the issue when snipping from Chrome (which was my main issue). I've also tested snipping from Word (which obviously a change in Chrome shouldn't impact... ) and that was also fine.

    I went to here: chrome://flags/#force-color-profile

    and changed the colour profile to sRGB (the below screenshot was a snip with HDR on, and as you can see... it's now fine)

    Give it a go.. see if it sorts it for you.

    I think the down side of this is HDR content inside Chrome (e.g. youtube video) will not display in HDR?

    Hey ZB06,

    I was experiencing exactly the same problem. I found a way around it. It's effective, but still a way around and not a solution. It will work, though. So, you need to search for an HDR video on YouTube and play it. Make sure the HDR icon is displayed on the YouTube player. Now, pause the video and don't close that tab, keep it open until you are done taking screenshots. After that, you should have no problems capturing your screenshots.

    It may be that the snipping tool can't handle having HDR content on and off automatically; therefore, you need a windows app to activate the HDR content for your display so the snipping tool can.

    I hope that Microsoft addresses this soon!

    What is crazier to me is a quick google search shows this has been a problem FOR 3+ YEARS! Really lousy that I can't take 10-bit screenshots with snip & sketch or snipping tool. One or two monitor setup. Discord w/ Experiments properly supports HDR screen sharing for those coming to the thread trying to find a live share with HDR support. h/x265 is not widely supported in the live stream space so it is unlikely you will see a large set of applications supporting this, but it is sad that non of Microsoft's own software support it either. Nor do they properly tonemap to 8-bit color to help with overexposure.
