I’m not blaming users for the “issue.” I’m trying to help people with the same issue I had. It was annoying. I found a workaround. It has helped fix this issue for many others in this thread that have confirmed the workaround fixes this issue for them.
And, no, the SDR slider has nothing to do with HDR. Turning it to 0 still gives games and videos that support HDR content the ability to use HDR.
The SDR slider brightens non-HDR content. Your desktop, your web browser, 95% or more of your apps do not support HDR. That slider is a gamma correction for that SDR content. It does nothing to HDR.
If you turn it to 0 HDR is completely unaffected. Then use your video card specific gamma settings to brighten SDR in Windows and the overexposure goes away.
I agree you shouldn’t have to do this and it should be fixed. But I’m trying to provide a workaround so people can do more than just yell at Microsoft. Because as you see that hasn’t accomplished a lot.
Yes, but most games and videos DO NOT support HDR. We DO want to have HDR enhancement for SDR content. And because Microsoft doesn't fix this bug, we can not have that.
Later edit: To make it more clear, I have a game that I play for 1 to 2 hours every day. That game does not support HDR, but looks much better when HDR is enabled. I want to be able to take screenshots from that game without them being corrupted by the HDR screenshot bug. How can I do that without Microsoft fixing this bug?
Even later edit: Also, I also use my computer for work, and sometimes I connect remotely to it with Team Viewer, and the entire screen is barely readable due to the HDR bug. How does that make any sense? Is that not a bug that should be fixed urgently?
While I appreciate you are trying to help, your workaround has very limited value compared to a true fix.
Hopefully last edit: Also, it's not just "gamma correction". For SDR content it automatically rescales the dynamic range based on the darkest and brightest colors on the screen over a time period. It is somewhat similar but not exactly the same as audio volume rescaling. It can not only make bright colors brighter, but it can also make dark colors darker, depending on the content, resulting in increased contrast.
