Over-exposure in screenshots and recordings with HDR in Windows 11

Hello, I am inquiring about an issue I can't seem to solve (without turning HDR off all-together, which defeats the purpose of having it even be an option in Windows 11)

In recordings (primarily using OBS) and in screenshots (with snip and sketch) everything appears extremely over-exposed / bright with HDR enabled. This is a big problem for me as I actually, well, want to use the OS normally. I record lots of clips and take many screenshots and I've finally gotten fed up of it and am now looking for a solution. Any help appreciated, thanks

(snip and sketch has since stopped doing it, however it likes to do it randomly now. commonly happens in fullscreen programs and also my web browser for some reason)

What you gave is a workaround and what we need is a fix. Do you think the majority of Windows users come to this forum? Snipping tool should work and adapt to either HDR on or HDR off in the default mode. Most users don't know about Nvidia control panel etc. Thanks for the workaround but Microsoft should have a fix for normal use.

Video card gamma settings as shown above are only for the desktop. How your game settings are affected by desktop gamma I couldn’t say. Your video games should have independent brightness adjustments available, as well. Make sure you’re adjusting the gamma under desktop color settings.

Dismissive? Maybe. Because people have ignored the solution given on the very first page while saying said solution was unrelated to the problem and pretty much attacking the person trying to help. The SDR slider is the problem.

Unhelpful? That’s your opinion. I laid out steps that have helped several people and myself.

The issue is HDR darkens everything SDR, so people tend to crank the SDR slider all the way over. That causes overexposure in apps that don’t support HDR like the snipping tool.

It’s not a band-aid. Once set properly it fixes the issue completely.

You can say it’s an issue MS need to address all you like. It’s the truth after all. But I doubt it’s high on their priority list. Their entire HDR implementation kind of stinks.

But if there’s a way around the problem, why not use it in the meantime?

I take back what I said about your fix shifting the issue to my game. Once I recalibrated my in-game HDR settings, after the 1.5 gamma change (and boosting the contrast as well to adjust for the color loss), it does appear that these settings resolve the issue in most situations that I can tell.

Screenshots work as expected and my game looks fine.

It still appears that live streaming in Discord doesn't look quite right. It looks much better, and is actually viewable, but it still looks overly bright to viewers.

I think this could be an expected attempt to convert HDR to SDR though, so this may be the closest we can get.

Your fix works well, but this shouldn't be needed and isn't going to be a solution for everyone (not sure if AMD Adrenaline software, or Intel's version for their GPUs has this same control).

It still needs to be addressed directly by Microsoft and I would still consider this to be a temporary fix as opposed to a solution.

"In recordings (primarily using OBS) and in screenshots (with snip and sketch) everything appears extremely over-exposed / bright with HDR enabled" - Telling a customer of an open platform OS like Windows 11, that they should alter their preferred workflow to use a Microsoft only tool that could even be turned off by their company's admin is not an acceptable response. This was previously working functionality that the upgrade itself from Windows 10 to Windows 11 (forced on many) newly caused, in Software engineering we call this "a bug" and usually are not allowed to provide a lazy, inadequate response like this which is to me, an ineffective answer to the question and it should be unsatisfactory by Microsoft's standards.

Also, I've noticed that with dual-monitor usage there is inconsistency in the sharpness of the "active main display" and the secondary. I can tell this because I can see it with my own eyes visually not due to monitor quality.(I have 2x Dell 1440p G-Sync compatible high end gaming monitors with EXCELLENT reviews in sharpness, brightness, and picture quality)

If it were system related it would not show to anyone else in streaming/snapshot mode as it shows identically in the other commenter's snips from the game "Stray") it's bad, it's not acceptable, and the answer needs to be "this is the ticket/future update that's going to resolve this mass issue" NOT use Xbox Game Bar which again, many company's admins don't even allow so your work around is only for a narrow user base as well.

It's not normal being able to use HDR with snipping tool. That should work from the start. Get your s**** together Microsoft seriously...
