Over-exposure in screenshots and recordings with HDR in Windows 11

Worked like a charm in Win 11 22H2 (build 22631.1825)

On a side point, I changed the colour profile in Chrome which seemed to fix the issue when snipping from Chrome (which was my main issue). I've also tested snipping from Word (which obviously a change in Chrome shouldn't impact... ) and that was also fine.

I went to here: chrome://flags/#force-color-profile

and changed the colour profile to sRGB (the below screenshot was a snip with HDR on, and as you can see... it's now fine)

Yeah, it was Snippets of Chrome (for QA work) that suddenly stopped working. This was following accidentally hitting the "Clear Clipboard" option in the edit menu of Irfanview. Turning the HDR/SDR slider down (to the left) helped with that screenshot, but made the rest of Windows unusable. So, I turned it back up to where it screwed up the screenshots. After 30 to 45 minutes, when I took the next set of screenshots, they worked fine again.

I will DEFINITELY try YOUR way next time it happens!

What I've pegged the problem as is this: that various applications will randomly respect (or ignore) the SDR/HDR slider, then switch to ignoring (or respecting) the slider, then back AGAIN! I suspect this is NOT a Chrome issue or an issue with any other app. My hunch is that is has to do with the way the Windows kernel REPORTS the state of the slider TO THOSE APPS.

I base this off of the fact that after EVERY SINGLE restart of Windows, HDR display is f---ed up, and even the slider won't fix it. However, if I don't touch anything, and wait until the monitor turns off (I set it to a 1 minute wait), then jiggle the mouse to turn the screen back on, Voila!, all fixed. In the reestablishing of the connection to the monitor, the HDR/SDR slider is PROPERLY queried, thus solving the problem, until something random happens and HDR support on Windows fails . . . AGAIN!

Yeah, apparently B2B (Business to Business, no ordinary consumers involved) backend Cloud management is Microsoft's money-maker now. SO, while they don't COMPLETELY ignore their OS division, it's no longer a TOP priority. Well, considering their OS marketshare dominance (versus MacOS or Linux), this is an unconscionable decision.

Perhaps they should let the OS division spin-off from Microsoft, and go it's own, profitable way. At least then they would HAVE TO pay attention to end-users, instead of ignoring and allowing GENERATIONAL errors to propagate up into new Windows versions, like HDR compatibility. HDR is not a new technology, and is quite a big deal in gaming, which is one thing Windows does well. If they put some real polish on their OSs, I'd be happy to pay a couple hundred for a new version. But that's not their angle. Now it's "Software as a Service"; i.e. give it a way for FREE, then sell UNBLOCKABLE advertising space. That's why I won't ever upgrade to WIndows 11, from Windows 10 Pro.

I must say, at this point, when Windows 10 is no longer a viable option (Windows 11 is NOT viable for me), I think I will finally switch to Linux for productivity work, and just us whatever Microsoft OS for gaming.

YES this did fix the issue, and hightlights the PROBLEM.

THE PROBLEM is that the SDR/HDR slider is IGNORED by applications about half the time, then THOSE SAME APPLICATIONS, later on, after an unknown cause, then suddenly RESPECT the slider.

I have this issue EVERYTIME Windows (10 in my case, but apparently not any better in Windows 11) restarts. If I let the screen turn off after 1 minute of inactivity, then jiggle the mouse to turn the screen on again, IT'S FIXED! That is a KNOWN cause/effect for when the slider is IGNORED.

I just now had the problem with Screenshots for QA work. At first, they look good. Then, suddenly, the NEXT screen shot (and ALL screenshots thereafter) is OVER-EXPOSED like in the question. Adjusting (lowering) the slider SCREWS UP the USER VIEW, but FIXES the Screenshots! Again, ignore/respect for the HDR/SDR slider is BUGGY AF. I had to readjust it AFTER the screenshot to continue using my computer.

What needs to be fix on Microsoft's end to address this issue?
