Over-exposure in screenshots and recordings with HDR in Windows 11

Hello, I am inquiring about an issue I can't seem to solve (without turning HDR off all-together, which defeats the purpose of having it even be an option in Windows 11)

In recordings (primarily using OBS) and in screenshots (with snip and sketch) everything appears extremely over-exposed / bright with HDR enabled. This is a big problem for me as I actually, well, want to use the OS normally. I record lots of clips and take many screenshots and I've finally gotten fed up of it and am now looking for a solution. Any help appreciated, thanks

(snip and sketch has since stopped doing it, however it likes to do it randomly now. commonly happens in fullscreen programs and also my web browser for some reason)

    Actually, you're wrong. That reply has everything to do with your issue. When turning HDR on in Windows 11 there is a slider used to adjust the brightness of any SDR content that may be viewed in your HDR environment. Most of us, myself included, put that slider all the way to the right, as regular content seems much too dark without doing so.

    But if you go and use the slider to slide it towards the middle or the left it will lower the exposure of SDR content, which is what screen captures/screenshots are. Meaning lowering the brightness via that slider directly impacts the exposure of screenshots.

    I agree that this is a bad solution to the problem, but perhaps you shouldn't attack the help if you don't fully understand your problem.

    I'm attaching 2 images. One is Slider 0 and the other is Slider 100. 50 falls between the two.

    I have two monitors and it happens anyway. Both with same brand monitors and non same brand, the issue is with how windows handles hdr.

    Is there a select section mode for xbox screenshots? I don't want the whole screen as a screenshot

    you could use greenshot latest release https://github.com/greenshot/greenshot/releases

    there is an external command plugin inbuilt

    configurable via the preferences

    install hdrfix to convert HDR colour space back into SDR https://github.com/brion/hdrfix/releases

    you might need to fiddle with the settings..

    steam overlay gets it right with the conversion, as well as various games such as no man sky photo mode.

    its only when falling back to windows OS screen capture, you end up with overexposure.

    WilliamX92 I have had similar problems sharing my screen within Teams, when I look at the screen it is fine but sharing it it becomes overexposed. The same happens when I remote into the machine using TeamViewer, however the fix suggested above has if not fixed the problem then at least made my screen viewable but I had to move the slider all the way down.
