Media Creation Tool - error code 0X80072F8F - 0X20000

I have a Dell computer from 2011. I'm trying to upgrade from WIN7 to WIN10.

I got an error message when trying to run the MediaCreationTool21H2.exe. It says to reference the error code 0X80072F8F - 0X20000. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Some server that the MediaCreationTool21H2.exe tries to talk to apparently no longer speaks the old TLS 1.0 security protocol, but Windows 7 SP1 still has the newer TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 disabled by default, resulting in this error code right at the start. So I had to first run the “Easy fix 51044” MSI to make a few registry changes to enable the more recent TLS versions, and then Media Creation Tool - error code 0X80072F8F - 0X20000 no longer appeared.

The newer operating system booted from the installation ISO image won't have that TLS-version limitation, so using that should be another solution to the same problem.

This issue might be because of several reasons such as the security software you may have installed on the computer, any program or application running on the computer at the back ground or due to some errors in the hard drive of the computer.

Please try the methods below and check.

  1. Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloadand delete all filesin that folder.
  2. Press Windows + Xkey on the keyboard.
  3. Go to Command Prompt as admin
  4. Type this command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow"
  5. Press Enter

If the issue persists, Perform the Clean Boot.

    Hi, If you follow the steps that Ramanan has put on this thread, you can download the iSO file to your phone and then drag it from your phone to your PC.

    The Best solution that i can recommend is:<br><br>Step 0: Make Sure you have a Phone that can download Files and transfer them via Cable onto ur computer, a wifi connection, atleast 6 GB of storage on ur PC and Patience<br><br>Step 1: Download the Windows 10 ISO File from the Official Microsoft Website (make sure you choose the right one for ur computer) on your Phone.<br><br>Step 2: Transfer the Downloaded File onto your computer.<br><br>Step 3: Get a Software like WinRar or 7Zip that can extract and unpack Files.<br><br>Step 4: Create a folder and drag the ISO File into it.<br><br>Step 5: Extract the ISO file in that Folder using one of the Named Softwares (or one of your choice)<br><br>Step 6: After everything is Extracted, double click on "setup" and you should be good to go<br><br>Make sure to plan in some time cuz it will definitely take some.<br><br>For some reason this does not work if you download the ISO file via PC. Probably because of some sort of External Media Storage Clause.<br><br>Hope this helps out!<br><br><br><br><br><br>Regards

    Doing what you describe did not solve the issue. I am trying to upgrade from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Home and I cannot get past this error. Please help! I cannot return my Windows 10 Microsoft Store purchase.

    I have managed to install. I had to do a full insalll and not save files and apps. Clicked the radio button don't save anything.

    I saved all my files and docs to a hard drive to transfer over once Windows 10 installed.

    I tried to install saving my files and apps on 4 occasions but each time, as it got to installing updates 15%, it rebooted my pc and uninstall the win 10 install 😡

    Just got an error code 43 now, my graphics driver needs to be sorted out.

    Hope this helps anyone and saves them hours of unecessary time trying to install win 10.
