    I use Windows Defender as my security software. I did turn it off when I tried your original suggestion.

    So the April patch failed too. I suggest doing a repair install:

    Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    If it persists, rename the software distribution folders as instructed below:

    1. Open Start and type cmd, right-click on "Command Prompt", and select "Run as administrator".
    2. Run the following commands at the Command Prompt one at a time:

    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    net start cryptsvc

    1. After all these commands are completed, close the Command Prompt window, restart your computer, and then try to update Windows.

    If it persists, use the system file checker to repair possible corrupted or missing system files.

    1. Open Start and type cmd, right-click on "Command Prompt", and select "Run as administrator".
    2. Run the following commands at the Command Prompt one at a time:

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
    sfc /scannow

    1. Then restart your PC and see if you can update.

    If it persists, download and install the update that is having problems manually.

    David I did all the steps twice that you recommended but unfortantely they did not solve the problem. However, I really appreciate your willingness to try and help. I hope you have a great week!

    I'm having the same problem. Nothing has come close to resolve it and WINDOWS 11 team ... NOT A WORD! WE NEED HELP!!

    My laptop has gove VERY SLOW!! and crashing programs. Anyone???
