Windows 10 Update KB5012599 Failed to Install - Error Code: 0x800f0831

KB5012599 downloads 100%, then after a period of inactivity it pauses at Installing 20% for an extended period of time, after which it shows that it has installed 100%, but about a minute after that it generates the 0x800f0831 error with matching failure to install message.

I have spent the last 2 hours trying to fix this problem, including running the Windows Update Trouble Shooter plus a host of other suggestions, but nothing works.

Never had any issues with Windows 10 updates till now.

I don't know what to do.

Yes, same here on 3 machines. Rebooted and it installed OK for us. Takes a while to download and a while to install.

Latest from Microsoft is that we will need to install the May Cumulative update to fix this, basically skip the Windows 10 April cumulative update. There will not be a specific fix or new release of 5012599. Not great as a large number of devices did not get updated in April so theoretically vulnerable.

Cumulative May Update KB5013942 just came in today, and it's still failing. :(

Run the in place upgrade from the installation media tool on microsoft's website. It will fully update your pc and make sure its up to date.
