I found a solution for this, but it involves the registry, so tread carefully.

My problem was that somehow, the default menu action for .stl files had been set to "Explore", which I assume tried to open something other than the default app I had chosen (3D Viewer). To verify this on your local machine, right-click an STL file, click Show More Options (since most of us are on Win11), and take note of the bold-text menu item near the top of the list. If it shows "Explore", the following could solve your issue.

Open Registry Editor and browse to the following key; expand it to see the contents:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.stl

Note the UserChoice key. Right-click it and delete it. This should reset the default action used when "double-clicking" a file in Explorer.

For me, this effectively removed the "Explore" menu item and reverted it back to "Open" - and voila! I was able to open STL files in 3D Viewer again by double-clicking, no matter where I was browsing from.

If there are multiple users on the machine that have this issue, you may need to repeat this process for each user.

If you go back through the Open With dialog and pick 3D Viewer again, it breaks the menu once again by adding Explore back - but removing the UserChoice key as noted above fixes it yet again!

I'm also having the same issue since installing the latest patch for Windows 11 (Windows 11, version 22H2) whenever I try to open an image file with Microsoft's Paint 3D. I get the "No such interface supported" error message when opening files either through the "Default app/File type" settings or through the contextual menu "Open with". Paint 3D is working just fine on its own and it can still open any file through its own "Open" menu. I've tried repairing the app through Windows' Installed app menu but it didn't work. With these few reports of different file types creating that issue but not systematically the same for everyone, it does seems like the patch broke something that is not app specific. So far, images are the only file type for which I'm having the issue, and of the many image editing apps I have, Paint 3D seems to be the only one that broke for me.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I also try to open an image file from explorer with Microsoft's Paint 3D. I get the "No such interface supported" error message as well? It works fine when I open 3D paint program and then load an image file, but when trying to open files by right clicking in explorer, then "Open with". Paint 3D is working just fine on its own and it can still open any file through its own "Open" menu. I've tried repairing the app through Windows' Installed app menu but it didn't work.

Please Help... It seems since the windows 11 update, So many things are now not working?? I can't see any response or reply to this problem with others that explain how to fix or what to do?

Hi Greg, I ended up re-installing the machine , that was the only way I got it to work

Update the App and it will run properly.
