Windows 10 22H2, KB5016616, KB5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410, KB5019959, KB5021233 hang on reboot after install

I'm trying to update to the latest Win10 update released on 8/8/22. Ever since that update was downloaded the machine hangs

on the required reboot after the install. I have disabled updates until I can find a fix. I've tried to download the update and install

manually but get the same results. Other updates, such as .NET, download and installed fine. Once the machine hangs it has to be rebooted 

2 times to get to the automatic roll back. At least that works for now.  I've run the Update trouble shooter and it doesn't fix anything. 

Windows Update and BITS services are both set to automatic.

There is an error in the event log but I think its from the install abort from a forced shutdown.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0845: 2022-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5016616).

Update 10/5/22: KB-5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410 also FAIL in exactly the same manner as KB-5016616.  Spinning dots on the reboot and the need to do a dual boot auto recovery.  Title has been updated.

Any help would be appreciated.

For me, the following solved the Problem:

Delete the Value data (all bytes) of

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\CurrVal(Default)

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\OldVal(Default)

One reboot and CurrVal(Default) should be filled again.

If you are not domain-joined, i would not expect any problems.

I'm not giving directions on how to access and delete the value data because i want skilled people who know what they are doing to test my solution.

    Sounds as if you are on a Desktop PC? not a laptop (you have "data device" Drive K).

    On that basis - all is not lost - or should not be.

    You say buy a drive and install W10 - yes that's the key. Then your old C: disk will almost certainly be visible post your new build (make sure it's disconnected in the meantime). It's "only" problem is that it can't boot - unlikely to be scrambled.

    Or if it's a laptop - put the drive in an external USB enclosure, only £10 or so.

    Outlook? Depends a bit on POP or IMap connection., and your use of any Personal Folders. But in either case your latest mail should be available in your User folder (either Documents or in Appdata) on ex C:, or even on your K: Depends how you set it up, and Outlook generation..

    Old software? Yes, these often have data buried somewhere obscure on C: - but again your projects at least should be available. (Or on your K:?)

    But installing old stuff could be a pain. In the 80s/90s I started the a habit of keeping all old installation stuff, ex floppies, DVD or whatever in an archive (E,g, Corel Draw V3 1992, V7 1998, still in use 5 or 6 PCs later!) But if you didn't, could be hard work. License keys? look hard on your old C: after new build. a good chance they're hidden there somewhere. Or previous downloads may still be there?

    And - to everybody else here at or approaching Thinkdeeply's predicament - back it all up to some external drive, now: And "all" means lots of nooks & crannies on C:, as above - NOT a W10 "backup" - it isn't what it says on its tin! And also use a tool like Cloneziilla or similar to clone on USB stick a precise & complete replica of your whole C: (Clonezillas is a bit Unix techy-ish intimidating, but works - other cloners are available, may be better interface.

    @info001 I'm the OP. Just to be clear, you did the above rebooted, installed the 2H2 update, rebooted again and did not get hung on the spinning dots?

    I do not have any entries at all under SECURITY and have rebooted many times so this doesn't seem like it will help. Perhaps that is our issue.

    I'm interested to hear from others.

    I checked many pc with the problem, but under

    HKLM\SECURITY.....

    I have no values at all !
