I'm trying to update to the latest Win10 update released on 8/8/22. Ever since that update was downloaded the machine hangs
on the required reboot after the install. I have disabled updates until I can find a fix. I've tried to download the update and install
manually but get the same results. Other updates, such as .NET, download and installed fine. Once the machine hangs it has to be rebooted
2 times to get to the automatic roll back. At least that works for now. I've run the Update trouble shooter and it doesn't fix anything.
Windows Update and BITS services are both set to automatic.
There is an error in the event log but I think its from the install abort from a forced shutdown.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0845: 2022-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5016616).
Update 10/5/22: KB-5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410 also FAIL in exactly the same manner as KB-5016616. Spinning dots on the reboot and the need to do a dual boot auto recovery. Title has been updated.
Any help would be appreciated.

For me, the following solved the Problem:
Delete the Value data (all bytes) of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\CurrVal(Default)
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\OldVal(Default)
One reboot and CurrVal(Default) should be filled again.
If you are not domain-joined, i would not expect any problems.
I'm not giving directions on how to access and delete the value data because i want skilled people who know what they are doing to test my solution.
No solutions other than hiding the update and preventing the auto install. I know of 2 updates that fail, what other one fails?
At this point, I'm probably going to be stuck rebuilding the affected PCs I support. I would love to know what is going on though.
Spot on B1GfeK. Yesterday I did a trial fresh install using a spare old SSD. Not all the way with apps, but Chrome up & running and a few other bits.
EUREKA! It’s certainly worked so far. Based on a W10Pro download to a USB 16/9, but still wanted 5 main updates and a string of minor ones. That did include 5017308, the current culprit. And treating myself to a new M2 500GB SSD arriving today for the real thing. Trial went very smoothly, hope that’s still the case with all the Apps on board. The good news is, seems to show there is no fundamental issue with my PC.
As a reminder for you all, basic gaming spec, it’s 2nd birthday this week. And 2 Reinstalls already - made no difference to the problem, but did zap a load of stuff, a lot of work to get back each time. Fortunately though all my important documents and files stored separately on a NAS. Done similar since buying an original green screen IBM PC on DOS for my company c. 1982. Initially on a separate partition, later separate internal drives (D:), and at home external drives over Ethernet since c. 2007. (USB caddy nearly as good.) I strongly recommend that to all - at least I have not had to worry about losing my life’s work, financial records etc etc. Leave Users/Name /Documents for MS to mess about with (OneDrive??!!) as they see fit.
I just tried KB5017380 2022-09 Cumulative Update Preview (etc). No surprise that this also resulted in the swirly dot hang
