Windows 10 22H2, KB5016616, KB5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410, KB5019959, KB5021233 hang on reboot after install

I'm trying to update to the latest Win10 update released on 8/8/22. Ever since that update was downloaded the machine hangs

on the required reboot after the install. I have disabled updates until I can find a fix. I've tried to download the update and install

manually but get the same results. Other updates, such as .NET, download and installed fine. Once the machine hangs it has to be rebooted

2 times to get to the automatic roll back. At least that works for now.  I've run the Update trouble shooter and it doesn't fix anything.

Windows Update and BITS services are both set to automatic.

There is an error in the event log but I think its from the install abort from a forced shutdown.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0845: 2022-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5016616).

Update 10/5/22: KB-5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410 also FAIL in exactly the same manner as KB-5016616.  Spinning dots on the reboot and the need to do a dual boot auto recovery.  Title has been updated.

Any help would be appreciated.

For me, the following solved the Problem:

Delete the Value data (all bytes) of

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\CurrVal(Default)

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\OldVal(Default)

One reboot and CurrVal(Default) should be filled again.

If you are not domain-joined, i would not expect any problems.

I'm not giving directions on how to access and delete the value data because i want skilled people who know what they are doing to test my solution.

    I confirm : the solution works !!!!!

I tested on many Win10 Pro pc (all workgroups, not in domain) and now all pc are able to download and installa updates without any problems.

    Thanks !

PS Microsoft now you know the problem and you should solve it on next windowsupdate round 2023-01 because many people are blocked with security updates on their Windows 10 machines due to this bug !

To Old AJS, I am up and communicating again now. I wanted you to know that I appreciate your helpful suggestions. I see a solution has been found at last- so well done to everyone for testing and testing again!

Yes a new HDD and fresh W10 install has been done and then I was able to find my Outlook pst file from the old drive and put it onto a friend's outlook so I could locate the email where I stored the download links and product keys of my Office. The I was able to download and install office and activate it-yay!

I can say now that I began keeping all my data on a separate drive years ago and also a backup of that data on another drive, plus on an external drive.

I haven't always updated the backup drives regularly - bad on me- but then we all become a bit blasé about these things when time goes by without incident.

I second what you said about warning everyone to keep data separate from the system and keep backups too.

It's funny (sad?) that I used to use Clonezilla regularly to clone my system drive, just in case, and it did save my bacon once. I was able to switch boot drive and I was up instantly, so good advice to others.

My problem was that on the last two times I cloned a system drive (not the Win 10 but my old Win XP and then Win 7 system), it damaged the source drive and I was unable to boot my original system! I was able to fix the Master Boot Record on both occasions, but the last clone was then unbootable and so useless. So I gave up and have not used Clonezilla since.

I would love to though. Maybe the latest version has fixed that issue.

I am still only part way through restoring everything after all this time, but I'm gradually overcoming the problems each time. I just managed to get an old 32-bit Cygwin install to download without errors (finally) and so move on to the next thing. It will be a while before I get my recent visual studio versions reinstalled. I-Tunes was not the problem I thought it would be. I lost my entire library a few years ago and had to import my music again manually and find album covers and release dates etc. for every track. This time I found I could copy the old user directory with its database over to the new install and it just worked!

Anyway, thanks again for your input.

(Thanks again, also, to all who worked towards a solution for the update issue. (Do I hear any sound from MS?, no I thought not.))

Douglas, just to follow up, the last update wiped out my restore points, so I was unable to do that. Thanks for your help though. I'm currently rebuilding my system after fitting a new hard drive and new windows 10 reinstall.

I'm glad that a solution has been found for all others though!
