Windows 10 22H2, KB5016616, KB5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410, KB5019959, KB5021233 hang on reboot after install

I'm trying to update to the latest Win10 update released on 8/8/22. Ever since that update was downloaded the machine hangs

on the required reboot after the install. I have disabled updates until I can find a fix. I've tried to download the update and install

manually but get the same results. Other updates, such as .NET, download and installed fine. Once the machine hangs it has to be rebooted

2 times to get to the automatic roll back. At least that works for now.  I've run the Update trouble shooter and it doesn't fix anything.

Windows Update and BITS services are both set to automatic.

There is an error in the event log but I think its from the install abort from a forced shutdown.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0845: 2022-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5016616).

Update 10/5/22: KB-5017308, KB5017380, KB5018410 also FAIL in exactly the same manner as KB-5016616.  Spinning dots on the reboot and the need to do a dual boot auto recovery.  Title has been updated.

Any help would be appreciated.

For me, the following solved the Problem:

Delete the Value data (all bytes) of

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\CurrVal(Default)

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\NL$KM\OldVal(Default)

One reboot and CurrVal(Default) should be filled again.

If you are not domain-joined, i would not expect any problems.

I'm not giving directions on how to access and delete the value data because i want skilled people who know what they are doing to test my solution.

I can add 2 more machines to the case. They are upgraded from WIN7 and started to show the issue with KB 5017308. I tried everything from simplifying drivers, reducing hardware, inplace upgrade etc. Nothing helped as it was the case with all the people here. Even upgrading the newer machine to WIN11 (older version) first succeeded and then the whole installation failed after applying online updates. Upgrading with current WIN11 failes right away.

It is not hardware related. I cloned the ssd from one pc and put it in another one several years older. After some restarting all the different hardware was found correctly and everything was working right. Then came the online updates and things went the same way as with the other machine.

In my many years of repairing and upgrading pcs I never had a software problem that was that persistant and unsolvable. I spent weeks investigating the issue because the windows installations are so valuable.

You do everything the way it should be, regular image backups, prompt windows updates, but still the system failes on you and there is no chance to go on but completely start from scratch. Weired.

What is their data discipline like?

Exactly. Very risky if you are not disciplined. I take a mountable image and hold it for 3 months just in case something is forgotten.

IMHO, if a clean install is the only solution then I'm done with Windows. I've had enough of this and spend way too much time fixing M$'s **** OS. A new install will be LINUX for me.

    Just a FYI.

Like a few others, I have now turned updates off. I also hid KB5016616 so it wouldn't install. I checked updates and had KB5016688 come through on my VM and it has the same results as KB5016616, with the spinning wheel on a black screen after reboot.

Not sure if it is the same main update as KB5016616 but with a few extra updates combined, but if you have issued with KB5016616 then KB5016688 may also produce the same issues.

I've now done a reinstall / retaining. No better, 2 more fails already. Well, worse,, actually: the first time there was definitely no orange dot on the Restart or Shut down options, and now it does not even report an error -just fails and comes back after "Repair" as a normal boot - with the immediate attempt to download again if you don't very quickly stab the Pause Update button.

Having had the "bonus opportunities" to carefully watch the fail process, seems very clear that after normal "Configuring" power down, BIOS attempts restart, searches SSD, another HDD and the DVD for a bootable sector or partition, and fails. For 2 or 3 cycles you see the brief flash of activity, then nothing, just the blank screen.

So it seems very clear that there is some fragment of incompatibility between KB5016616 and the BIOS/hardware. On random systems with apparently no common factors whatever. Get on the case, Microsoft!

Oh, and it's not the AV software - my Norton was not even installed on the first occasion.

Mine is ASUS motherboard - any connection?

NB I have had a long telecon, and long chain of mail from supplier (PC Specialist). Full marks for support to 23-month old machine, but still no progress. I hope they are contacting MS.
