Since last Windows 10 automatic update done on 8 PCs (KB5016616, KB5012170 & KB890830) 4 PCs are now showing "task host window is stopping background tasks" on shutdown.

Does anyone know what caused this?

Thanks

. . . . . and in yet another followup to previous posts of mine, with an issue today of disappearing system tray icons, this issue is back 'again'.

I wonder if there is a way to determine which task is blocking the proper shutdown of taskhost.

For me, it only says "Task Host is shutting down background tasks" but does not indicate which task it means.

I have seen screenshots from other user where it specifies the blocking task on the shutdown/logout screen. Is this some special option to enable first, since it would help tremendously to determine the broken taskhost task preventing shutdown.

When I look at taskhost instances with process explorer, I see 3 in total. one has working set of ~800mb and running no tasks. Killing this instance makes the PC shutdown normally sometimes. But not always.

I too have this problem and not being too technically minded have hesitated to run some of the fixes in case they mess up my Windows 10 PC (22H2)

Like others have reported when shutting down I get the pop up Closing 1 App and Shutting Down, Task Host Window, Task Host is Stopping Background Tasks.

If I leave this after about 30 more seconds the PC reboots and the log in screen for Windows appears. When I try and shut it down the same this happens so this appears to be a re-boot loop of some sort.

If I shut down anyway there doesn't seem to be any issue as a result of doing this, except the re-boot loop is back again next time I start the PC.

Searching for a Fix I have discovered this, but before trying it wonder if it is safe to do so
