Windows 11 Cannot install update KB5016629

Have Windows 11 (upgrade from Win 10) - cannot install KB5016629 (and before it KB5015814) - tried all MS recommendations but still doesn't install. Have now hidden it using WUSHOWHIDE. My WINVER is currently showing Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.739). When the update tries to install it goes up to 100%, reboots and then it says, "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry - undoing changes. Please keep your computer on", then it takes about 10 minutes undoing all the changes and sets everything back to where it was - BUT when I re-boot again, it again tries to install the updates and does EXACTLY the same.

I have looked at MS sites and other windows-related sites (like https://howtofixwindows.com/windows-11-update-failed-to-install/…) I have followed all the instructions, even downloaded and installed the update manually (from the MS Update catalogue), it appears to install, gets to 100% and then I get EXACTLY the same error message. It's a bit concerning, as the same things happened with KB5015814 and I thought the cumulative update in KB5016629 would cover everything that I couldn't install with KG5015814, but as neither will install I am still left with an old build.

Looking at these forums and other general posts on the Internet and the MS Feedback forum, I know that I am not the only one having these problems

Again, for all those having install failures please refer back to my post on August 14 in this thread about talking with Microsoft support and their recommendation of doing a repair upgrade to fix this problem. I finally did the repair as suggested and it worked while all other install fixes didn't. If you look through most of the threads on this subject, and I have since I've had the problem since mid June and was one of the original posters on this problem, you'll find that what works for some people won't for others. I disabled Malwarebytes and was able to install the July cumulative update. That didn't work for August. I finally tried the repair upgrade and as Microsoft said, this should work and it did. It took about 45 minutes to complete the entire procedure and the installation of KB5016629 was slow and paused in several places but it did complete successfully. Follow the directions carefully (specifically about not doing any updates during the install.... do them after the repair is completed) and hopefully you'll find success.

Just wondering, a friend did a repair upgrade and said it messed up his desktop and a few apps on the reboot. Did you find this at all?

Otherwise there's supposed to be a major upgrade within a couple of months, I might just wait for that.

I had no problems. The desktop was just as I had it set and I tried running about a dozen or so apps (programs) and everything was working fine.

I was going to wait for 22H2 also as it should be here on Sept 20 but then started to wonder if there would be any problems installing it with the current state of my system. So I finally figured I'd try it. I have backups from Macrium Reflect as a fall back if there were any problems. And you can rollback the install anytime up to 10 days if you need to.

I'm sure there is a small subset of all Windows users who have problems after installing any update just as there are obviously quite a few having problems doing these cumulative updates. That's why backups should be a must for any user.

I’m glad you got it installed with no problem and I make regular backups as well. But unless I’m missing something I don’t see a solution for the thousands of us that can’t get it installed.
