Windows 11 Cannot install update KB5016629

Have Windows 11 (upgrade from Win 10) - cannot install KB5016629 (and before it KB5015814) - tried all MS recommendations but still doesn't install. Have now hidden it using WUSHOWHIDE. My WINVER is currently showing Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.739). When the update tries to install it goes up to 100%, reboots and then it says, "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry - undoing changes. Please keep your computer on", then it takes about 10 minutes undoing all the changes and sets everything back to where it was - BUT when I re-boot again, it again tries to install the updates and does EXACTLY the same.

I have looked at MS sites and other windows-related sites (like https://howtofixwindows.com/windows-11-update-failed-to-install/…) I have followed all the instructions, even downloaded and installed the update manually (from the MS Update catalogue), it appears to install, gets to 100% and then I get EXACTLY the same error message. It's a bit concerning, as the same things happened with KB5015814 and I thought the cumulative update in KB5016629 would cover everything that I couldn't install with KG5015814, but as neither will install I am still left with an old build.

Looking at these forums and other general posts on the Internet and the MS Feedback forum, I know that I am not the only one having these problems

I had the same problem and spent an entire day trying various purported fixes, trying to update and rebooting many many times, always eventually getting the dreaded "Something didn't go as planned...", and cursing Microsoft vehemently, before I found this page. I stopped (not uninstalled) Malwarebytes and turned off .NET 35. After another interminable time downloading and sticking for hours on 34% and 69%, and almost giving up, this time it worked!

So many thanks John DeV for that, much appreciated.

In my case the problem seems to be associated with error 0x80073701 related to .NET Framework 3.5. I cannot remove this windows feature with any method (DISM, standalone installer / removal tool etc), and the best I get is the message that "The Referenced Assembly Could Not Be Found. Error: 0x80073701". This is most likely region / language related - i have at least two regions and languages on my machine, and do not intend to remove them from all accounts.

see this reply on another forum: https://www.urtech.ca/2018/02/solved-windows-feature-installation-the-referenced-assembly-could-not-be-found-error-0x80073701/
