Windows 11 Cannot install update KB5016629

Have Windows 11 (upgrade from Win 10) - cannot install KB5016629 (and before it KB5015814) - tried all MS recommendations but still doesn't install. Have now hidden it using WUSHOWHIDE. My WINVER is currently showing Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.739). When the update tries to install it goes up to 100%, reboots and then it says, "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry - undoing changes. Please keep your computer on", then it takes about 10 minutes undoing all the changes and sets everything back to where it was - BUT when I re-boot again, it again tries to install the updates and does EXACTLY the same.

I have looked at MS sites and other windows-related sites (like https://howtofixwindows.com/windows-11-update-failed-to-install/…) I have followed all the instructions, even downloaded and installed the update manually (from the MS Update catalogue), it appears to install, gets to 100% and then I get EXACTLY the same error message. It's a bit concerning, as the same things happened with KB5015814 and I thought the cumulative update in KB5016629 would cover everything that I couldn't install with KG5015814, but as neither will install I am still left with an old build.

Looking at these forums and other general posts on the Internet and the MS Feedback forum, I know that I am not the only one having these problems

Not really trusting in-place repair installs, really. Usually, half-way something craps out, or you lose accounts/folders, etc. Will only be my last resort.

Hey guys! For those who tried pretty much everything with no success, I just did an install/upgrade, which went very smoothly. PC is up to date, and I kept all my files, apps and settings. But given how often those updates fail to install properly, this long process is sadly kind of overkill, but will probably be necessary for many of you, as it was for me. But at least it's good to know that this solution should work for pretty much everyone. I just hope Microsoft won't force me to do that too often in the future...

Mine won't even delete. :) Keeps saying assembly is missing (same as in update log) when I try and unstall it as Windows component.

I started another thread... see if this helps...

This is really a post to possibly help those that are/were having trouble installing KB5016629 and/or KB5016691.

I had trouble installing the July cumulative update KB5015814 but was able to install it by turning off Malwarebytes. This did not work for installing KB5016629 in August. I did the in-place repair upgrade and was able to install KB5016629 but I also turned off Malwarebytes for that install.

When it came time to install KB5016691, I DID NOT DO any of the following:

I did not turn off Malwarebytes.

I did not run DISM, SFC or Windows trouble shooter.

I did not turn off .NET Frameworks 3.5

The install completed in the same manner I saw with the KB5016629 install.

I had a pause at 25%, jump to 34%, pause at 35%, jump to 68%, pause at 69%, jump to 88% and then completion with a restart.

So it appears that doing the in-place repair upgrade ONCE solved the problem...so far. We'll have to see what happens next month but for the time it all looks okay.

I hope this might work for any still having update problems but can't answer when it comes to what went wrong or how the repair fixed it.
