I just want to "disable" confounding Auto Arrange files within folders in Windows 10. I can't understand that when you leave file/folder icons in the position and order that you want and then Windows decides to mix them up. I'm continually wasting time trying to find lost data. It's ridiculous. Does anyone know or can create something that just allows you to arrange or sort files within folders, and Leave them alone, without the OS messing them up?

It is no wonder that Microsoft continue to ignore the plea to allow users to list files in a folder freely, when there appears to be some confusion about the issue/problem. As stated above in Windows XP users could arrange files in a folder in any order. That was the last time this could be done, well as far as I know because they could not be so arranged in Window 7 and still cannot be done.
This is the problem. Not being able to untick> Name. It is quite deliberate by Microsoft

Removing the Name property from the view will not make any difference to how the files are ordered or whether there is an interface to drag the files to any arbitrary arrangement.
As mentioned earlier, the last time Windows officially provided the free arrangement feature was Vista. The code still existed in the OS, and could be enabled with some complex registry entries, up until Windows 10 1703. After that, the part of that code that remembers the arrangement was completely removed.
Sorry, I must disagree. I cannot see any reason why a user would want to drag files anywhere in the folder. All that I want to do is to be able to arrange the files in a list in any order. The 'Name' prevents this. I still have a Window XP laptop and I do not remember ever being able to drag the files anywhere. AND these kinds of discussions to NOT help the case for moving the restriction, whichever one you or think it is.
The point is, if I've got a folder of 30 images and I want to drag a few around (into separate sections of the window) to see which ones I might want to keep/delete/swap, I can't do it. There's simply no reason whatsoever why anything in a folder should be auto-arranged if the user prefers not to do it that way. There's no need at all to remove that option from users. If a user doesn't mind auto-arrange, that's fine, but for those of us who prefer to be able to disable the feature, it's a right pain not to be able to do it.
