I just want to "disable" confounding Auto Arrange files within folders in Windows 10. I can't understand that when you leave file/folder icons in the position and order that you want and then Windows decides to mix them up. I'm continually wasting time trying to find lost data. It's ridiculous. Does anyone know or can create something that just allows you to arrange or sort files within folders, and Leave them alone, without the OS messing them up?

2024-09-14T06:54:54+00:00 It is no wonder that Microsoft continue to ignore the plea to allow users to list files in a folder freely, when there appears to be some confusion about the issue/problem. As stated above in Windows XP users could arrange files in a folder in any order. That was the last time this could be done, well as far as I know because they could not be so arranged in Window 7 and still cannot be done.

That is incorrect. In Windows 11, you can still set the sorting and grouping one folder at a time, just as you could with previous Windows versions.
This thread is about the ability to drag files in Details or Icons view in any arbitrary order and have that stick. It's a feature that was last available (by default) in Windows Vista.
The XP/Vista view mode can still be enabled, via registry settings, to allow the arbitrary rearranging, but, as of Windows 10 1703, the arrangement no longer sticks.

2024-09-13T18:38:09+00:00 Nope. Can't keep files in folders in the order and placement you left them in windows 10!!! Used to be able to then they inexplicably took it away. Crazy. I use Mac os primarily now just for that reason. Can you believe that files in folders in Mac are actually in the same place and order when you access them again? Windows is too crude and backwards now.

2024-09-13T18:22:40+00:00 I'm not sure what disable auto-arrange is except for the desktop icons. The order of files in your folders always has been controlled by the Sort by and Group by choices on Explorer View tab.
