I found that my One Drive sync was activated. I uninstalled my One Drive app and voila....all my thumbnail pictures were back.

Thanks. This opened many but not all of my thumbnails. Why? Is there a way to get the remainder opened?

I'm not a real tech geek here. I was just very frustrated with this issue on my own computer and decided to spend a day trying to solve it. I tried all the normal avenues to no avail. Then I noticed that my OneDrive sync was activated (not sure why this activated) .and all my pictures from my picture folder were in my OneDrive. OneDrive is just supposed to backup that folder. Since I always backup my files/folders to an external thumbdrive, I didn't bother to move the files from OneDrive back to my Pictures folder before uninstalling OneDrive. Perhaps I should have suggested people perform this move before uninstalling OneDrive.

I just discovered that my OneDrive sync activated (why? I don't know) and all my folders (pictures, docs, videos) were placed in OneDrive. This "placement" was what initiated the loss of my thumbnail pictures. I uninstalled OneDrive from my computer and all my thumbnail pictures came back. OneDrive is supposed to be a backup only and since I already backup everything to an external thumbdrive, I didn't bother to move any of the folders back to Pictures folder on my hard drive. I would suggest that before uninstalling OneDrive you may want to make that move first.

I did not back up my photos. I got maybe 10% returned as images, the remainder still as icons. One folder which did come back as photos is not only images. This is a really bad problem with Windows 11. I wish I could get an answer that will fully work.
