Windows 11 Install error - 0x80073701

I spent quite some time browsing through the posts on this problem and also tried a lot of suggestions which did not work. Then I read July 14, 2022 JeffBakst post which described exactly my problem and decribed he disabled Malwarebytes and disabled .Net 3.5 etc. I started to disable Malwarebytes alone and it did not work, same as you. Then I disabled .Net 3.5, restarted my device and the update worked. I did not guess it was .Net 35, nor did I invent anything. I simply tried what JeffBakst suggested which did work for him.

I'm glad this also worked for you. At least worked for 3 individuals. For me tends to prove it was it. And this is a much simpler solution than Inplace installing OS over OS.

I had the same problem. I first deactivated Malwarebytes but this did not resolve the problem. I then turned off .Net 3.5 and restarted my device. Then installed the 2002-07 Cumulative update KB 5015814 for Windows 11 via Check for updates and IT WORKED !! It took longer to download and install than usual but IT WORKED. I then reactivated .NET 3.5 and Malwarebytes.

For me it sounds it was a problem with .Net 3.5 since deactivating Malwarebytes only did not do the job.

I deinstalled Malwarebytes but that did not help

What gave your the idea to disable .NET3.5 I would have never guessed

I had the same problem, and none of the tips found on the internet helped. Sfc, dism, manual install from the catalog, etc... No success. Even an in-place upgrade with the win11 ISO did not work.

What finally worked for me, is to do this in-place upgrade, after disabling all non-microsoft services.

• download win11 ISO
• run msconfig:

> on the tab General, chose Selective Startup, with only Load System Services checked,

> on the tab Services, check Hide Microsoft Services, and then Disable All.

• mount the ISO, run setup.exe
• let the installer do its job, keep apps & files. takes some time ...
• when done, run msconfig again and re-enable all non-microsoft services

After all this, win update shows that KB5015814 is successfully installed.

Two ways to turn the Windows features on or off.

1. Go to control panel, then programs and features. Then select Turn Windows features on or off.

-or-

2. Mouse Right click on start (bottom left of screen), select Search and type Turn in the seach area. Turn Windows features on or off will appear on screen, select it.

Then .Net framework 3.5 will be first in the list. Untick the little box next to it and press enter. Windows will do a few things. Wait until

windows asks you to restart your machine. Restart, then go to check Windows Update and see if KB5015814 downloads and installs correctly. If it does, then you can reactivate .Net 3.5 by doing almost the same thing as turning it off, i.e ticking the little box next to it and press enter.

If Windows asks you to search your system or the internet to reactivate .Net, you can choose either. I did select to download it from the internet.

If it still does not download and install correctly, I suggest you pause the Windows update for one or two weeks and wait until Microsoft provides a fix. Installing OS over OS can be quite complicated and if you are not experienced enough, I would not recommend to do it.

PS: I did what Nicholas Joslin1 explained in his post on July 14, 2022 on the same thread to turn off .Net 3.5 and also what JeffBakst explained in his post on same date, only difference I did turn off Malwarebytes and .Net 3.5 in two steps. I first deactivated Malwarebytes and this did nothing, then turned off .Net 3.5 and found it was the problem.
