Can't install KB5014668

I've been running Windows 11 since Nov 2021. This is the first update failure I've encountered. I was trying to install KB5014668. It stopped at 25% install and showed error 0x80000ffff. I ran troubleshooter (multiple times) to no avail. Upon a restart, it showed installing an update, in the middle it rebooted and then on the subsequent restart it showed install to 48% then said something went wrong, not to worry as it was restoring. It rebooted again, showing the same message, on the next restart it booted into windows. I've run sfc /scannow and dism restorehealth. Neither showed an error or helped. I use Macrium and also tried mounting an image taken before I tried the update and copied the Software Distribution folder and pasted it over the current folder. No help there either. I am able to download Windows Defender definition updates okay at this point.

I could just restore the whole drive to a point before I tried the install but would like to use that as a last resort. Right now I can perform multiple restarts with it booting straight into Windows. So I'm not sure if I should just wait until the July cumulative is available to see what happens or is there something I can or should try at this point, like try to download and install it straight from the update catalog?

Thanks for any help with this.

Update... I did try to use the Windows Catalog to do a manual install. It seemed to download ok but when I hit install it failed immediately with an error code of 0x80070002 (I got this from the reliability monitor)

I got excited when I saw the Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 hoping that it would solve the problem. But, after successfully installed Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8, I still can't download/install the new KB5015882.

Thanks GeorgeFliger but what "fix" if any have you used in the past and what KB was it used for? I'm interested to see if any listed "fixes" are a permanent solution.

Couldn't find your actual post for some reason so copied your response out of the email I got.

As for fixes in the past... it's been a while since I had any issues with an update, but as I remember I restored my system with a backup I had made (I do a complete system backup every Friday night) about a week or so before the faulty update. It seems something got corrupted in the system after that backup so I was able to do the update after the restore took place. This last time the error must have occurred between updates so restoring the system didn't fix the issue. And, to add insult to injury, I found out that my backup solution wouldn't do a proper restore to the NVMe drive that was my primary in my new PC. That caused a whole can of worms. It seems not all backup software recognizes NVMe's set up using Optane and RAID. I had to change the BIOS/UEFI to see the drive as an ACHI setup which allowed my drive to be seen by my backup. That only partially fixed my problem as I couldn't boot from the drive. Turns out I had to use a Recovery USB, boot to a command prompt, run DISKPART to select the proper drive and primary partition, run BOOTBCD \C:\Windows to get the boot files properly installed then reboot, change the drive configuration back to Optane w/RAID, boot, let DISK REPAIR run and finally got to the login screen to get logged back in. The error was still there and the update still couldn't be installed. What I should have done from the beginning was to simply put in my Windows Install USB, run setup and done an Upgrade, keeping all my apps and files. That fixed the issue and would have saved me a bunch of time had I tried that first. So, after the Windows upgrade and reboot I went back into Windows Update, downloaded the Cumulative Update and let it do it's thing. This time it went in without a hitch. Sometimes doing the simplest things first is the best thing to do.

    SUCCESS!!!!!

I've been dealing with this issue for 1-3 months. Tried everything I found on the internet. Today I downloaded and reinstalled 3 .net framework applications and restarted my computer, thinking it would be just another of hundreds of attempts so far. Nope. Smooth as butter. All updates are now caught up.
    These are them...
even if they're on your computer, run these installers. Repairing them doesn't work the same. DO NOT UNCHECK ANY .NET FRAMEWORKS in Programs and Features!!

.NET Framework 4.8 Runtime. The link is here...
