Microsoft GameInput Application Reconfiguration Crashes Win 11 PC

This was mostly resolved and i hadn't had a crash in about 2 weeks after a lul of 2 months. Last night I finally did the w11 22h2 update and had few hours of gaming, no issues then. Now, almost 24hrs after update, it started again.

monitor blacks out, if there is audio playing in the background it's still live, not really a crash. but the fans go haywire, start working in a setting i can't manually do when pc is in working order. can't force reboot the pc, have to cut off power and boot it from there.

2 weeks ago i did some stress test on the gpu(rtx3060) to see if it was the culprit. Limited the power to 85% and temp to 77 celsius. It ran without issues and the limits i set still stand, so don't think it's gpu.

Just happened while i was gaming. I cut off power, rebooted the pc. gpu temp at 50, pretty normal. 2 minutes in while browsing the net with no load and it goes again. reboot again, looks nominal again. now 10 minutes passed and nothing so far.

can't for the life of me figure out what is happening. what is more perplexing is that this has been going on for months, even years for some people. it is probably not actually related to gameinput and it is a red herring like Ryan says. damn you microsoft.

I had this same exact issue. I even took the same approach that you did to resolve it. This last round of Windows updates took me back to square 1. So to confirm once windows updates are installed you will eventually have the same problem and have to navigate back and put an x in front of those 2 folders again.

OK, this solution may not help everyone but it solved my issue.

For me, the gameinput reconfiguration was, as stated by someone previously, a red herring. When I looked into it, I noticed that the gameinput reconfiguration was actually occurring on startup following the crash (basically the event states the computer was shut down unexpectedly and gives an initial time of when the computer was restarted, if you expand the details however it will state the actual time, which will be slightly earlier, that the computer crashed).

After viewing the event viewer, there were some events (apologies as I cannot remember what they were) that when googled suggested there was an issue with the power.

I took a look at my power settings and noticed that my computer was running 'balanced' mode while plugged in. After changing the power settings to 'performance', my computer hasn't crashed since (compared to 3 crashes a day previously while gaming).

BRUTAL UPDATES

This is normal behaviour ( = Microsoft Windows components frequent crashes) on update of GameInput device or GameBar from the MS Store, even when input devices are not in use:

So sad 50% of MS applications do crash on regular updates instead of clean stopping task/services before installing 🤦🏻‍♂️

Tried this and unless I applied it wrong, it did not fix the issue for me. Looks like you either need to constantly watch and delete the folders and uninstall game input every time it updates or wait for Microsoft to eventually fix this. All my drivers are up to date, bios is on the current revision and cannot be downgraded, and even graphics drivers are updated. I literally formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 11 fresh and it still happens.
