Microsoft GameInput Application Reconfiguration Crashes Win 11 PC

When playing any of my games launched through Battle.net my entire PC will crash, when checking the Reliability Monitor 100% of the time the crash is preceded by a "Successful application reconfiguration" of Microsoft GameInput. I have zero need for GameInput and for what I play I have no issues when I uninstall GameInput, but Microsoft forces the install each time my computer restarts.

I've looked for this issue an is appears it started for users with Windows 10 but there's no solution ever found. Microsoft support has people check their drivers, etc (all of my drivers are up to date and Windows is fully up to date) but no actual solution is offered. As far as I'm concerned I own my computer and should be able to determine which services I do or do not have installed on my PC but Microsoft is forcing this buggy install and I am unable to delete or otherwise modify the root folder this application is contained in.

I'm desperate for some sort of solution to this problem and it would be great if Microsoft would fix whatever this issue is. Having to remember to uninstall this app every time I want to play a game on my gaming PC is frustrating.

    This issue seems to come and go for me. It's frustrating, I run the same hardware with Linux with no issues.

    I just wanted to add that making sure relevant drivers are up-to-date seems to help for me. For some reason I had three crashes yesterday, so I had to address the issue as it was interfering with my work. Every crash coincided with a GameInput reconfiguration.

    I decided to go after the drivers after what GiuseppeMichieli wrote. I should note that I do not use secure boot, because I boot into Linux as well as Windows, which doesn't work seamlessly with secure boot on. I already had up-to-date BIOS. My system is x470 Taichi with Ryzen 9 5950x. GPU is Nvidia GTX 1660. I grabbed the latest drivers for sound (I had a blue screen after installing sound), GPU and chipset. System has been stable for 24 hours and there have been four GameInput reconfigurations. 24 hours is not that much time, but I had three crashes within an hour and they stopped after I installed the aforementioned drivers. I thought I should share this given how frustrating I'm sure this issue is to other users.

    Nothing new, also other XBox components crash on update randomly... This can't be fixed: it's a bug by Microsoft in the update process (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft GameInput\x64\gameinputsvc.exe c0000374 Heap Corruption) clearly with low pri for them. When auto-updating it will simply crash randomly, 'till MS will finally fix it one day.

    In the meanwhile I will try with the following compatibility fix (using Microsoft Compatibility Administrator tool), let's see if it will work:

    Well, since I did this I have no GameInput crash logs in the Reliability Monitor anymore, and on every reboot I see the GameInput Service reconfiguration thing logged (but no crash). Just a coincidence?

    It must be clear that Windows 11 22H2 has strenghtened security, so that various devices have to 'dialogue' one with another in a determined manner, orchestrated by the BIOS and the TPM fw/hw. That said, an user must be aware of: 1) determine system BIOS version and - if obsolete - update to the newest version; 2) it has to install the OS with EFI partition on boot device; 3) setting-up 'secure-boot' in the BIOS; 4) graphic card or integrated device must be compatible with secure-boot environment.

    My experience with an MSI B450 chipset system with AMD Ryzen 5 2600 CPU is that after updating BIOS, no further occurrence of game-input faults happened.

    I spoke too soon. After several successful GameInput reconfiguration updates, another crash. Moving to Windows 11 was a big mistake.

    I took a look at my power settings and noticed that my computer was running 'balanced' mode while plugged in. After changing the power settings to 'performance', my computer hasn't crashed since (compared to 3 crashes a day previously while gaming).

    This is the apparent solution for me. The only glitch from switching my power plan from "balanced" to "performance" was it had the side effect of enabling wake on lan for the network adapter. Once I realized this, it was easily addressed. Thanks to Ryan for suggesting this fix.

    Microsoft: this work around is a clue. Your update is depending on behavior that may not be there. Do your research and fix this bug properly. The only time my computer crashes is from Windows Update. Unbelievable!
