Microsoft GameInput Application Reconfiguration Crashes Win 11 PC

When playing any of my games launched through Battle.net my entire PC will crash, when checking the Reliability Monitor 100% of the time the crash is preceded by a "Successful application reconfiguration" of Microsoft GameInput. I have zero need for GameInput and for what I play I have no issues when I uninstall GameInput, but Microsoft forces the install each time my computer restarts.

I've looked for this issue an is appears it started for users with Windows 10 but there's no solution ever found. Microsoft support has people check their drivers, etc (all of my drivers are up to date and Windows is fully up to date) but no actual solution is offered. As far as I'm concerned I own my computer and should be able to determine which services I do or do not have installed on my PC but Microsoft is forcing this buggy install and I am unable to delete or otherwise modify the root folder this application is contained in.

I'm desperate for some sort of solution to this problem and it would be great if Microsoft would fix whatever this issue is. Having to remember to uninstall this app every time I want to play a game on my gaming PC is frustrating.

    First of all, don't confuse "GameInput" and its service(s) with "Gaming Services"...

    In short, just open your installed app panel and isolate "gameinput": if you find something dated around feb-march 2023 UNINSTALL IT (it seems an old MS leftover for Win10), and cross your fingers 🤞🏻:

    Tested this myself and on next reboot Win11 23H2 silently reinstalled it (same version 10.1.22621.3036), BUT now I have a single GameInput Service (Auto, triggered. "Restart service" when it fails) and no uninstall option in the App list:

    Pretty pissed off Microsoft. Your POS GameInput crashes my PC all the Fing time!!!!. I'm sick of this ****. Fix your Fing software!!!! I don't even have to be doing anything for the GameInput to reconfigure crash. Reliability report tells you all you need to know, GameInput is the problem. I even have the service disabled and it still is crashing my PC. Hate windows, do your dang job and fix it!!!

    Nothing new, also other XBox components crash on update randomly... This can't be fixed: it's a bug by Microsoft in the update process (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft GameInput\x64\gameinputsvc.exe c0000374 Heap Corruption) clearly with low pri for them. When auto-updating it will simply crash randomly, 'till MS will finally fix it one day.

    In the meanwhile I will try with the following compatibility fix (using Microsoft Compatibility Administrator tool), let's see if it will work:

    Well, since I did this I have no GameInput crash logs in the Reliability Monitor anymore, and on every reboot I see the GameInput Service reconfiguration thing logged (but no crash). Just a coincidence?

    I did the workaround above in Nov 22. As of today I have no random "Microsoft GameInput" crashes anymore after reboot:

    Please, try my above solution using Microsoft Compatibility Administrator tool (download the Toolkit from here: Windows ADK, and select for download only the: Application Compatibility Tools, ~12MB) and create a gameinputsvc.exe fix selecting "FaultTolerantHeap"...

    It seems to have worked for me (or it solved by itself but I doubt).

    I spoke too soon. After several successful GameInput reconfiguration updates, another crash. Moving to Windows 11 was a big mistake.

    This was mostly resolved and i hadn't had a crash in about 2 weeks after a lul of 2 months. Last night I finally did the w11 22h2 update and had few hours of gaming, no issues then. Now, almost 24hrs after update, it started again.

    monitor blacks out, if there is audio playing in the background it's still live, not really a crash. but the fans go haywire, start working in a setting i can't manually do when pc is in working order. can't force reboot the pc, have to cut off power and boot it from there.

    2 weeks ago i did some stress test on the gpu(rtx3060) to see if it was the culprit. Limited the power to 85% and temp to 77 celsius. It ran without issues and the limits i set still stand, so don't think it's gpu.

    Just happened while i was gaming. I cut off power, rebooted the pc. gpu temp at 50, pretty normal. 2 minutes in while browsing the net with no load and it goes again. reboot again, looks nominal again. now 10 minutes passed and nothing so far.

    can't for the life of me figure out what is happening. what is more perplexing is that this has been going on for months, even years for some people. it is probably not actually related to gameinput and it is a red herring like Ryan says. damn you microsoft.
