Microsoft GameInput Application Reconfiguration Crashes Win 11 PC

According to your description, I knew that when you are playing a game your computer crashes and you are sure GameInput is causing it, although you have tried uninstalling the component, it will be automatically installed every time you reboot the system. Is that right?

First of all, GameInput is part of Microsoft Gaming Services. It is used by Universal Windows Platform (UWP) games on Windows 10 and Xbox One, it is usefol for running and programming in games in MS platforms.

If you have installed the Xbox Beat version, it is recommended that you uninstall the component, or use the following command to completely uninstall the Xbox-related content, and then reinstall the latest stable version of the Xbox. Run Power Shell as an administrator (win logo key + "Q", type "Power Shell", select "Run as administrator") and type the following commands one by one.

get-appxpackage *Xbox* | remove-Appxpackage

add-appxpackage -register "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\*Xbox*\AppxManifest.xml" –disabledevelopmentmode  

Have you tried uninstalling Game Service? If not, you can try the following command to achieve this. Run Power Shell as an administrator (win logo key + "Q", type "Power Shell", select "Run as administrator") and type the following command.

get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers

Then try to open the game, if the game still reports errors, you can try reinstalling the game service in the Microsoft Store. Type the link below in the address bar of your Edge browser, then follow the instructions to open the Microsoft Store and reinstall the game service.

Then such a problem may be caused by corrupted system files. You can try the following commands to try to fix it. Please run Command Prompt as an administrator ("Win" logo key + "Q", enter "cmd", select "Run as administrator"), and enter the following commands one by one. These two commands require network support, please keep your network connection smooth and stable.

sfc /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

My solution has continued to work for me since applying it, here's what I did:

You'll find Microsoft Gaming Service folders under C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. The WindowsApps folder is hidden so if you don't see it you'll need to enable hidden items (in file explorer click View>Show>Hidden Items). The 2 folders are:

Microsoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe

Microsoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

I'm assuming portions of the folder name have to do with versioning so it may not be the exact same name but the key is to find the Microsoft.GamingServices folders.

I then just placed an "x." in front of the name to have the system stop referencing the folders:

x.Microsoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe

x.Microsoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

What I don't know yet is if these folders will be re-installed after a Windows update.

Here's how you give yourself ownership of the folders if you get an error about not having onwnership:

Right-click>Properties>Security>Advanced

At the top of the Advanced window you'll see an owner listed (likely System), click change and make yourself the owner. In Windows 11 that doesn't appear to be enough to give you ownership and you'll get the error again that you need to give yourself permission to the folder. Go back to Properties>Security>Advanced and check the "Replace all child object permission........" box at the bottom of the window. You should now have full ownership to rename the folder.

Thank you for the response, unfortunately I didn't receive notification of this response and continued to troubleshoot the issue. I did manage to find my way through the fairly convoluted folder permission/ownership process for Windows 11 and simply renamed the Microsoft Gaming Services folders and then uninstalled GameInput. It appears now that these folders are no longer available for the system to reference GameInput has remained uninstalled and I am no longer having an issue with my computer crashing.

I will also try you suggestions in case some future update re-installs these folders. Thanks again.

UPDATE

On 6/24 Microsoft Gaming Services updated which re-installed the commented out folders which is what I was afraid of. Like clockwork now that the folders are back in place the "successful application reconfiguration" of Microsoft GameInput crashed my PC during a game session. I'm going to apply the changes Mosen recommended.....but really really wish Microsoft would just fix this known issue already as it appears to have been impacting users for several years now. I'm assuming there are people who do want to use Microsoft Gaming Services and don't want their PC to crash.
