Remote desktop connection logon attempt failed.

Hello,

I am trying to make connection from my desktop to my laptop via Microsoft's RDP.

Whenever I try to connect, my credentials do not work. I am using the same Microsoft account on both of these devices. And I am certain that these credentials work elsewhere.

Now, I can connect the other way, from my laptop to my desktop following the exact same steps and credentials.

After a bit of looking on the web I found out that a Microsoft moderator pointed out in this post ( https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/cannot-log-in-my-pc-via-remote-desktop-locally/bca0edd9-1f91-4ea8-b8c6-9749007ac172 )
that RDP is not possible on PCs logged into the same Microsoft account. This is not my case as it only works one-directional, which is odd.

Both of my systems are running on Windows 10 pro.

Maybe I do not understand what I have to use as my credentials... I have just used my Microsoft account credentials for the account logged into Windows 10. After trying to change my password for that account, still only the old password works to log into remote desktop.

I was wondering if anyone could give me anymore insight on my problem or lead me to any solution.

    Hello everyone,

    After a day of trying I found out it was possible connecting to my laptop by using the username that is used like in the file explorer, which was automatically set to the first 5 characters of the involved Microsoft account. Together with a new password that I changed for this account.

    To connect to my desktop it was sufficient to login with Microsoft email and the old password. I still don't understand why it is like this but I'm relieved.

    I was encountering the same issue when attempting to RDP to my new laptop from the desktop computer. I could RDP to my desktop from any computer on my network without issue. I verified that my account settings, RDP setting and firewall settings were all configured correctly. I tried both my Microsoft account and the local account to no avail.

    SOLUTION: What worked for me.

    On the PC you are attempting to RDP into.

    1. If you do not know your local account name run PowerShell or Command Prompt and run the command 'whoami'
    2. Hold down the shift key, and right click on a shortcut of your choice. I used PowerShell, but Notepad or some other small application should work.
    3. Look for and click the 'Run as different user' item in the context menu that appears. (If you are using Windows 11, you will need to go to the 'Show more options' first then 'Run as different user'
    4. You should now be prompted for credentials. If the User name field is not empty or already filled, choose 'Use a different account'
    5. Enter your local user account in the following format .\mylocalaccount
    6. Enter your password, and click OK.
    7. The application should launch.
    8. Close the application.
    9. Go to another computer and attempt to RDP again using the same account as you launched above.
