what is this error: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR3 during a paging operation.

i ran some HP diagnostic tests, that I believe the system passed. There was one that was a virtual memory test, and another one. I see that there is a possibility that it did not test both hard drives. the third party software would have tested the external drive.

I could double check the hard drive diagnostic tests with the HP diagnostics. I keep thinking there is an issue caused by windows updates, since what i have seen is that in the past, a search issue appeared, then basically stopped, Then it reappeared when I had the external drive attached. By all of the information provided, It could have happened due to trying to use some windows setting while searching. The page file is for not making windows overwork itself (or something like that).

So I may need to double check with a diagnostic on the hard drives. i can run a processor test since that will test the temperature, but it seems like the main test for the hard drives could be the long and short tests.

It seems logical that an internal drive could be wearing down, but something like a windows update caused a conflict with the external drive by the explanation that you provided.

\Device\Harddisk2\DR3

\Device is Windows notation for identifying physical devices attached to the motherboard. When you see a string of characters beginning with \Device, that means we're talking about a physical device that is (or was previously) attached to the motherboard of your computer in some fashion (e.g., SATA connector, USB port.)

\Harddisk2 refers to the third physical hard disk that is (or was) attached to your motherboard. (The first one is Harddisk 0.) To identify the disk, open Disk Management and see the hard drive it identifies as Disk 2.

\DR3 has no real significance. It's simply the serial number of an event involving a hard disk. Windows is continually writing events to Event Viewer, and in the normal course of business it could write several events for a single disk operation. DR3 is the third event written to Event Viewer in connection with whatever disk operation your computer was performing at the time.

A paging operation is when Windows writes a page of memory from RAM to disk, or reads a page of memory from disk to RAM. A page of memory is a contiguous block of memory; the exact amount differs under the circumstances. Windows is forever writing and reading memory pages; that's part of how Windows manages its use of RAM.

Based on the information in your original post, it's impossible to know exactly what error occurred. The other error you mentioned might have nothing to do with the first error.

If you want to check whether a hard disk has a problem, the best way to do that is to run the disk manufacturer's own diagnostic utility which you can find on the manufacturer's website. If the diagnostic utility identifies a problem, the disk's manufacturer will help you. If the diagnostic utility does not identify a problem, and your computer is not actually experiencing an issue, you should forget about the message.

If the message frequently re-appears, and the manufacturer's disk diagnostic shows no problem with the disk, either one or more of your software applications is not supported on Windows 10, or someone made a mistake when they were changing your computer's settings.

When software is in use Windows may have BSOD or unexpected shutdowns and restarts.

This disrupts activity and files can be lost.

If you don't want to run WDV then that will complete the troubleshooting.

Please see my reply dated July 30th, 2022. I have been unable to reinstall drivers before directly after uninstalling them. I don't have clear problems yet, but the fact is that your suggestion found that what is probably the main hard drive is actually the solid state hard drive, which was advertised as the secondary hard drive. That is wearing down in less than a year. The search/explorer issue started again when i started this thread (presumably after a windows update), and seemed to coincide with a paging error.

It doesn't seem to help anything to just keep opening threads and not actually find a solution, just like it doesn't seem to help just to always reinstall windows, then update it again and get the same errors. In my mind, it is not the solution to just reinstall windows over an error, because that will not always repair some software bug, since it will just install the original program, and then the updates can install the software bugs over the base programming. There is also the possibility of some updates to drivers conflicting as well.

If there are drivers that are incompatible, that is one thing, but then if the driver cannot be reinstalled, that is problematic. Also, it is always recommended to install the manufacturer drivers instead of microsoft drivers.

Will crystal disk info possibly provide additional information? Is it possible that the previous dump file would?

I am wondering if uninstalling the drivers ever has caused windows to be unable to reinstall them? Perhaps if specific drivers are uninstalled?

I suspect that there might also be some sort of software errors that are related to programming errors. I have made mistakes when changing code myself. While I understand that hardware and software might have conflicts, I wonder if some code might have errors if some string of code is not taken into consideration.

I think that once before, I had a system that I had uninstalled a driver, and had to do some workaround to reinstall it. Something like getting the driver a different way. It may have been that I had to get the driver on a disc, then reinstall it, since I could not install it from the internet on my system. It is possible that some disc had a driver that came with the system (whether windows installation, some backup system software at the time, or something similar), then I had to update it online later. Indeed, i would like to figure out what was happening on my system, but i don't want to cause more complications. This particular issue seems like something that could be related to the operating system programming, and it would use some file to index the hard drives. It then caused an explorer error once again. Logically, there is a possibility that it could relate to a driver, but it may not be the root cause.

Still concerned about the hard drive. I think the one that showed it was wearing down is the solid state hard drive. It is supposed to be the longest lasting hard drive, but is wearing down in less than a year of use.
